After today, the game loses XBox Live support, leaving you with nothing but the mediocre one player experience and 4 player splitscreen multiplayer.

This is kinda sad really, especially when most fans I've met say that Halo 3 is shit.

Since I don't pay attention to this sort of thing, just curious as to why they're losing XBox Live? Did Microsoft just decide it wasn't necessary anymore so they decided to dump it?

I'll always consider it good..infact, I'll always consider it great. This is a sad day, but at least we'll always have the wonderful single-player/co-op campaign.

I liked it.
@ Dods
The reason they're shutting the on-line play down (along with a many other X-box games) has a lot to do with the servers and cost.

I played Halo 1 a couple of years ago. I thought it was decent, nothing spectacular (maybe it was more mind-blowing in 2001). I picked up Halo 2, but only made it about halfway through before I got bored with it.
Multiplayer games have never interested me. I'm all about the single player experience.

Which is nothing but "Shoot, duck, reload, Repeat" it's not like a graceful game that involves a story-line that is as riveting as the original Wolfenstein, but at least Wolfenstein had a reason for that... Halo the Pinnacle of the FPS genre? I have to disagree up and down with it...

I'm not much of an FPS fan, but IMO Gears of War rapes Halo.

they are getting rid of xbox live support for the original xbox and its xbox live enabled games.
xbox live still exists but only for the 360. now they can get rid of the 100 friend limit and make more enhancements to their service.

Is there a reason why they're doing it though?

Apparently they can't implement certain features like uncapping the friend's list (honestly who cares? 100 is more than enough) or tying windows mobile games into live with the original xbox live support still in place. It's probably not worth the cost of upkeep for the handful of people still playing Halo 2 either. Anyway whatever. It's 2010: time to upgrade.

Well, as far as I'm concerned it's an absolutely exhilarating game. Even without a tight storyline, it's still very epic due to the variety and size of the set pieces, the enemies, the relentless action and the vehicles.
What really makes Halo 2 great and stand out from many other games in the genre, is the enemy behaviour, you actually feel like you're fighting aliens, not dumb fuckin' robots dressed as aliens. Slick A.I is something all First person shooters should have, as it takes the action to a much higher level.

Agreed, amidst the many Haloclones roaming the market on not only 360, but also PS3 Gears stands out to me.

Those games are both grossly overrated imo, though I did prefer Gears to Halo as well. Overall, the whole space marine theme is boring as hell and nearly as played out as WW2.

Halo 2 Fans Still Playing After Xbox Live Shutdown
Sometimes telling a loved one goodbye for the last time is just too painful, especially after spending the better part of the last decade at one another's side. Such is the case for a handful Halo 2 fans who've refused to let go of their first-person shooter of choice, even after Microsoft pulled the plug on the original Xbox Live roughly two weeks ago.
It turns out these intrepid gamers have been able to remain connected to the old Live service as long as they don't shut down their consoles or lose their internet connection. As a result, there are still around 13 people still playing Halo 2 online. The initial group of holdouts started much, much larger, but -- as tends to happen when you leave your system on for weeks at a time -- many have dropped out due to their consoles overheating, random disconnects, and other issues.
A fellow going by the name of Joe Campbell decided to chronicle this stalwart bunch of Halo players in a thread on the official Bungie forums. You'll find his updated list of remaining Halo 2 users inside, as well as links to any livestreams that may still be running.
"We will keep playing until we are all forcibly removed," Campbell writes. "It could be by Microsoft, Bungie, our Xbox's overheating, or just lagging out. Not for competition, not for a prize, but for the love, and memory of Halo 2." |

You guys never played the second one, did you? God it suck. It looked pretty, but there was no good story, too many shark jumps, and the fact that they completely forgot about the lambent wretches is just lame. Also, the multiplayer (vs,) blows and horde is the only thing to play with your friends after the campaign
