According to the official web site of the Westboro Baptist Church (WBC) — an independent Baptist church and hate group known for its hatred of homosexuals and its protest activities (which include picketing funerals) — WBC is planning on picketing Ronnie James Dio's public memorial service on Sunday, May 30 at 2:00 p.m. at The Hall Of Liberty located at Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills, 6300 Forest Lawn Drive, Los Angeles, California.

What will presumably one of WBC's standard "peaceful sidewalk demonstrations" is meant to "remind you who worship that old Serpent, Satan, that your time is very short," according to a post on the "Upcoming Picket Schedule" page of the web site. The post continues, "You know 67 year old, Satan-worshiping (or at least one of their enablers) Ronnie James Dio (of showing his devil horns to the world each time he goes in public) Black Sabbath fame is dead, right? We'll be there! Just because the chances of any of God's elect being amongst this group of heavy metal sycophants is slim to none does not mean they should not get some good words."

The post goes on to say, "Yes, it is true that Ozzy Osbourne did 'accidentally' bite off the head of a bat, but That is the least of their sins (little nasties!), they currently do not do that, but they throw raw meat to the audience and encourage violence of Every Form!"

The WBC web site then proceeds to list "admitted sins of this now dead and in hell pervert: 1) He hates his neighbor(s) starting with Ozzy Osbourne, and continuing down to his pornography star niece Gen Padova! 2) He hates God. Pay especial attention to the fact that he changed his original sir name from Padova to Dio, which means God in Italian. 3) Ronnie the simpleton enabled, and encouraged Sorceries: everything he was about including the little finger horn thing (he got this from his mother which is an incantation to ward off the 'evil eye') to the drugs, bloody raw meat and his fellowship with those pentagon necklace wearing freakish band members."

The post concludes: "Yes, Ronnie James Padova (Not Dio) is currently residing in hell. When all those who worship him and his false gods meet him in hell it will be just like this: Isaiah 2:12 For the day of the LORD of hosts shall be upon every one that is proud and lofty, and upon every one that is lifted up; and he shall be brought low: Isaiah 14:11 Thy pomp is brought down to the grave, and the noise of thy viols: the worm is spread under thee, and the worms cover thee. Praise God all ye, His people. The Great Day of the Lord draws nigh. Amen!"

According to CNN.com, the members of the Topeka, Kansas-based Westboro Baptist Church filed a legal brief with the high court last year indicating that they "believe it is their duty to protest and picket at certain events, including funerals, to promote their religious message: 'That God's promise of love and heaven for those who obey him in this life is counterbalanced by God's wrath and hell for those who do not obey him.'"

The congregation is made up mostly of pastor Fred Phelps and his family. The pastor has 13 children, and at least 54 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. He described himself as an "old-time" gospel preacher in a CNN interview in 2006, saying, "You can't preach the Bible without preaching the hatred of God."

They picket dead Soldiers funerals too, you expect these creeps to behave differently in any other circumstance? Though I'm pretty sure they do this bullshit for the publicity, they've made similar statements for a bunch of other notable persons (Heath Ledger, George Carlin, etc.) Keep in mind their "Congregation" is really really small, in the hundreds or thereabouts, I'd wager somewhere in between 90 to 150 total, most related to Fred Phelps.

I just went from laughing my ass off at a different thread to intense hatred.

I understand you have the right to protest, and most of the time protesters don't bug me, but they seriously picket funerals? What the fuck is wrong with these people? How do you think the attendees of one of these funerals feels? Not only did you lose a loved one recently, but being near people with signs saying that the aforementioned loved one is "going to hell" due to "wrong" choices they made in their life.

And why the hell would you picket Dio's funeral? Because he created the hand sign? Because he was in a band with loud guitars? I can tell you why they would picket Dio's funeral, because he was a notable celebrity in the world of Metal. They're just looking to get attention and to rile up those who listen to that style of music. This is completely and utterly disgusting.

These people seriously need to be dealt with in some fashion. Lock them up in prison, give them the death penalty, or something.

These people can all go fuck each other into a swirling bullshit bloody tornado... in hell. I have my views on religion and I make my jokes about church, but this is just a matter of human decency. Quite honestly, you would think logically that the sides would be reversed. The Satanists should be the ones picketing the funeral of a guy who jokingly used God with his image as a marketing tool. Wait, why would they do that?

Oh, the issue here is that he's basically a Satanist enabler? What fucking rock god doesn't have a little taste of Satan in him? What music did these fucking white-robed misanthropes listen to growing up? I mean, I likes me some Christopher Cross every now and then, but I don't go piss on people's funeral just because I'm from fucking Kansas where basically nothing exists... except for this holy crusader attitude. There are other things you can do to feel better about yourself, like get a new fucking hobby or build a skill that hasn't been pretty much useless for hundreds or years. At least televangelists were after money.

Obviously this group has no credibiliity. When you go under the name "God Hates Fags" you're fairly oblivious to what Christianity is all about. They give true Christians a really, really bad name.

Fuck these scumbags. They've been protesting military funerals for years and it makes me sick.

Ronnie never had problems with Ozzy from my understanding, nor did Ozzy really have problems with Ronnie. I always thought it was Sharon who always made a big fuss about shit, which is why Sabbath toured under the name Heaven and Hell instead of Black Sabbath.

Well apparently Dio left Sabbath the second time because the rest of the band wanted to open for Ozz. It's actually totally understandable, and I find it hilarious that the Christians researched this

Dio's birth name is Padavona, not Padova. Gen Padova is pretty cute though.

One of two things need to be done--

ONE- Picket the hell out of Fred Phelps' own funeral. This fuck is old as a mummy, and you know it's not going to be long before he croaks. I say a big group needs to protest it, and if ANYONE in his flock yelps about how tasteless it is to interrupt funerals, well...

TWO- Fake it. Tell them Dio's funeral is somewhere, then hold it somewhere else. Since these guys obviously live to troll, troll 'em right back. Wonder how dumb they'd feel picketing a funeral home with no one in it.

The thing is...I wouldn't put it past them to NOT announce his death and to have a private ceremony before they do, which is very unfortunate. Hopefully they do though, because I will totally be there, mocking them, telling them that God hates Phelps, etc.
