20th Century Fox is going Commando again, setting David Ayer to write and direct a reboot of the 1985 film. Ayer is the former Navy soldier who wrote Training Day and moved into directing with the dark dramas Harsh Times and Street Kings. He will put his own real-world spin on this original premise: a retired elite special forces operative sees his daughter kidnapped and is told she’ll die unless he gets on a plane and kills the rival of a nasty exiled dictator. In the original, Schwarzenegger jumped off the plane before takeoff, and killed everyone involved in the kidnap plot, in a real beefcake turn that followed Terminator. Ayer’s protagonist will be less brawny, but more skilled in covert tactics and weaponry. |

This got me thinking...
"...Schwarzenegger jumped off the plane before takeoff, and killed everyone involved in the kidnap plot..."
95% true for just about all of his early movies:
Commando, Predator, Running Man, Terminator, Conan, Red Sonja, Raw Deal
Something happened with Twins that reduced this statement's truth for his future movies to about 50%. Still, killing only 50% of the people in the plot isn't bad. That is pretty much about what Jack Bauer does, right?
I see no reason to remake the movie, and honestly if they are going to change it enough why not just give it a different title? It has been 20 years since Commando was released and people accepted a movie named Kick-Ass. Just make this one Commando Kick-Ass and it would be an instant hit.

A lot will ride on who takes over Arnold's roll. They say he'll be less brawny and more tactical. If it's some asshole like John Cena, then they're not even trying. If it's Jason Statham, I like the guy but I still think it would suck. If it's Chris Evans they can go fuck themselves. Michael Cera--I'm there on Opening Day.

I don't see how anyone can justify remaking ANY Arnold movie. There is no modern-day Arnold. The closest we have is guys like Gerard Butler, Russell Crowe, or (sigh) Vin Diesel. And they are all just EPIC FAIL compared to Arnold.

Commando wasn't horrible, but I agree it was probably one of my lesser favorite Arnold movies from the 80's. I always loved the part on the plane.

I consider it to be the prototypical "guy movie." Guy movies are like pizza......when they're good they're great. And when they suck.....they're still fucking great.

The original Commando was cheesy as hell and couldn't possibly be more unrealistic, but really that's half its charm to me.

People they aren't fucking remaking cool hand luke. They are redoing a cheesy ah-nold movie.
3 possible outcomes:
It will be better than the original
It will capture the cheesiness of the original
It will be worse than the original
Regardless of which happens the first one shouldn't get ruined for you.

Oh boy, now it'll be like every modern action movie. Expect the lead to speak with a slight to moderate rasp when he's especially serious or angry, weird ass shots that zoom in at inappropriate times to show how intense everything is, and lighting that makes everything seem like it's under those particularly strong fluorescent lights.

Instead of a typical 80's action movie with non-stop explosions?

Don't forget the mandatory 80's action movie car chase sequence, look out fruit stands and alleys full of carboard boxes!

I'll be honest, I prefer the goofiness of 80's action movies. Yeah they can be stupid mindless fun but when the heroes are faced with a dilemma and that 80's music starts up you know that you're in for a lot of good action-packed fun. With modern movies it seems like they try to add just a little too much realism sometimes, making them feel more like dramas.

There's so many goofy scenes in Commando, like where he rips the chair out of that chick's car, or kills those guys by chucking circular saw blades at them, or the aforementioned "Let off some steam Bennet!", fuck Ima watch it when I get off shift.

Exactly. I hated the Bourne Identity movies for that reason. Guys like Bruce Lee or Van Dam could actually pull off some pretty impressive feats of athleticism on camera. Nowadays, all we get is frantically changing camera angles to create the illusion of blinding speed.

The movie is pure awesome, but only because of Arnold. No other actor can make that shitty script watchable. Besides, this movie has already been remade with a less brawny actor, it was called Taken.

Since they're remaking bad eighties movies, why not remake Tango&Cash?

we know the original wont get ruined regardless of this remake.
i think we are more offended at the fact someone is trying to remake something that doesnt need remaking.
like the wizard of oz remake. you brought up several facts regarding that movie in terms of sequels, cartoons, books, black remakes, etc etc, and that i shouldnt let a remake bother me. i agree, i shouldnt let it bother me, but the wizard of oz is already perfect as it is, so there is no need to remake it.
it just feels as though these producers have some sort of weird ego trip thinking they will make something perfect better.
so, in essence, its like a slap to the fan's face. its a slap because they believe we will watch anything that has to do w/said remake.
now im just ranting. im drunk, so i dont know if any of that made sense.

Oh, come on. Imagine how much more badass "Civil War" would be if the opening was a soundbyte from Commando:
"Sully, remember when I said I'd kill you last?"
"Yeah Matrix, you did say that!"
"I lied."
