Looks like the Chinese Women's gymnastics team fielded an underage competitor in the 2000 Sydney Olympics, and have been stripped of their bronze medals.

Kinda makes you wonder about the gymnasts they had in 2008 who looked like they hadn't hit puberty yet.

Yeah, every Olympic season, there is suspicion about the Chinese bringing underage girls. Most of the time, they can fudge the passports with the help and approval of the Chinese government, but I do remember in Sydney them getting caught and it being even more suspicious than usual. Shame that it took them 10 years to get it all sorted out.

That whole Sydney Gymnastics competition was fucked up. I remember being really into gymnastics at the time and being outraged that they messed it up so badly. There was this controversy, dodgy scoring on many of the routines because of judging "glitches", and they even accidentally set one of the apparatus a couple centimeters too low, so a lot of girls fell on their vaults and weren't allowed to redo them after the mistake was found and corrected.

If Australia ever gets another Olympics, I'll be very surprised.

This doesn't surprise me. It is a tough issue to tackle. Is child abuse in one country child abuse in another? That is pretty much the only reason why countries don't allow younger athletes to compete. It is an ethics issue, not a fairness issue. In the end, since this is a multi-country event, rules need to be established in advance and if you break them, you cheated and you deserve to lose. Unfortunately for those girls, they aren't at fault because they were children at the time.

I had never heard about the settings being low. That is really bad. A part of me does think that units of measure should be present on the devices themselves so that they can be clearly seen at all times by both the people competing as well as the audience and judges. Even still... their moves are so specific, someone could really get hurt with mistakes like that not being caught.

It goes both ways, either they are too young(this topic/article) or too old(the whole thing with the pitcher being too old for little league)

In the end just be honest. In these days if you cheat on the national/Olympic level you will get caught.

Yeah GP, it was totally bizarre. Like, how does that even happen in such a prestigious, exacting competition like the Olympics? I think the horse was set 1 or 2 centimeters too low if I remember correctly, so it wasn't obvious, but enough to completely screw up their very specific vaults, like you said and it's a miracle none of the girls didn't get seriously hurt. It knocked a few of them out of the competition completelyscore-wise though which I'm sure was more painful than any physical injury.

Be honest unless you are a female ski jumper. In that case put a ball of socks in your crotch and wear shoulder pads or you don't get to compete.

Man, I got exited about the topic, until I read the last 5 words of the topic title. Sad

I don;t remember the issue over the Sydney games, but I sure remember Beijing. Some of those kids couldn't have been over 10. Seriously.

I feel terrible that the athletes are the ones who have to suffer for this though...how sad to win a medal, and then get it taken so much later, for something that wasn't your fault. Sad

Idk much about gymnastics, but I gather that its a lot like figure skating (which I DO know...or did, til they fucked up the scoring system) in that it can be very subjective, and easy to manipulate results if you out your mind to it. (Salt Lake City, anyone?)

Wasn't there some controversy in figure skating awhile back about the French judges giving higher scores to the Canandians even though the messed up their routine, while USA had a solid run, but scored lower?

It was in 2002. But it didn't screw Americans...it screwed Canadians. The French and Russians made a deal. French get Ice dancing, Russians win pairs figure skating.

Don't ask me how I knew that without looking it up.

No, Knyte's actually right (sort of). The Ice Dancing thing did happen, but the reference I made was to a huge judging scandal that happened in the Salt Lake City games in 2002. The French judge actually screwed the Canadians OUT of the gold medal they earned and gave it to the Russians. Its a long story though; if you're really interested, I refer you to Sir Wikilot:

This particularly pissed me off because Sale and Peltier were my favorite Pair by far. Still are.
