The movie Avatar is coming out on the 18th and I'm wondering what you guys think about it. For me, I am intrigued... It looks like a Star Wars/Lord of the Rings/Halo bastardization... I like that. Very Happy

I'm iffy. I've never been a huge Cameron fan. I'll see what happens when it comes out, but I sense another Ishtar or something.

I'm thinking it will break-even atleast but, I don't know about the critical reviews. I'm hoping its good.

Well, given the rate at how much crap people usually buy into, I'm sure I'm probably wrong. People like looking at stupid crap but not absorbing anything, which is why I stay away from blockbusters as much as possible.

I honestly don't know what to think. I mean it looks pretty, but... Confused

This is one of the first movies I've ever come across where I want to wait for reviews purely because I genuinely have no idea how I feel about the movie, or even what its really about.

The imagery seems really cool to me (Of course, imagery doesn't make a movie on it's own), and the plot's premise is interesting (i.e. advanced human space miners run into primitive aliens), but there are several things I can see from just the previews that look wrong.

The aliens are stupid looking. - I know it may seem like a silly thing to gripe over, but if you have read anything into extraterrestrial research, then you will know that any real, encounterable aliens certainly wouldn't look just like us but with blue skin and pointy ears.

Unnessesary tack-on love plot - Between the guy and the alien chick. Does every fucking movie need one of these?

The aliens will win - God forbid we have a realistic ending.

The aliens and human meatheads both look like stereotypes - The aliens will be wise, in tune with nature, and mystical, where the humans will be orders and resource obsessed psychotic wackos with no conscious. How do I know? I think it's pretty easy to tell from the commercials.

Technology gaps - Seriously, humans have huge mechanical exosuits and extrasolar craft, but we can get a guy out of a wheelchair?

If anyone wishes for me to elaborate on any of these points, just tell me. I know I can be a little hard to understand sometimes.

Something tells me there's going to be a preachy message somewhere in the movie.

Yeah, it's gonna be all like "Don't cut down trees and shit" which is lame. Not that I enjoy trees being cut down, but we have Smokey the Bear for that shit, not every science fiction movie has to be deep it just has to be fun to watch.

Apparently the game sucks. G4 points out the story in the game is bad:

http://g4tv.com/games/xbox-360/62453/James-Camerons-Avatar-The-Game/review/

If the game mirrors the movie I am scared(as much as I want to see it)

If it really took James Cameron this long to make this movie and how he was describing it at E3 for the Ubisoft press conference it should be amazing. He described working "hand-in-hand with Ubisoft."

I really hope the game is a side-story to the movie. I have been looking forward to this movie for a while and it had better be good in some regard. Anyway, your best work is behind you Jim...deal with it.

It looks really pretty, but I just don't care at all about anyone in it or the whole "bigoted soldier undergoes a secret infiltration of the natives and eventually becomes sympathetic to them and learns a lesson" plot.

Yeah, and you know what movie is going to do almost that exact same plot, but infinitely better and more lovably? Plant 51. Plus, it was animated by Pixar and has the Rock in it. Game, set, match.

This is the exact impression I got from the trailer, except I don't even think it looks all that pretty. Just your standard CGI bullshit we've come to endure from most films.

Is it just me or is the whole "bigoted soldier undergoes a secret infiltration of the natives and eventually becomes sympathetic to them and not only learns a lesson, but fights for the natives against the government he once worked for. What a twist!" plot one of the most overused and fucked out Hollywood cliches?

Seriously? They spent $300 million to tell that same old story again? Where's the appeal?

No, no, no, see this time it's different because they create a mixed DNA CLONE HYBRID of the soldier with an alien so THAT'S how he learns compassion this time! It's so original man...

I had no idea what you guys were talking about, but then I saw a commercial for it.

In all honestly I don't care what it's about or shitty it may or may not be, I saw people piloting mech type things and that alone made me want to see it.

Anyone else get a feeling of Fern Gully VS Halo when they watched the trailer? Confused

Honestly, I think it's just going to be like Transformers II: Michael Bay Wants Your Cash all over again. A lot of flash, not much substance, and probably some bullshit message sandwiched inside of it somewhere.

Only a Prime can kill another Prime. Unless it's not convenient to the plot otherwise.

It'll probably play out like this: A minute and a half of exciting action, then 20 minutes of boring drama/love interest crap, another minute and a half of exciting action, 20 more minutes of boring crap, repeat until credits roll.

I will gladly give my $8.50 because Cameron has spent so damn long working on this project, even though I think it doesn't look all that great.

Plus, I want to see a movie in 3D, and a man movie, not a bullshit kids movie. Do I think the movie will be that great? Probably not, it looks like some sort of movie that would have something to do with Halo or that weird flower planet from Star Wars Battlefront 2.
