If you're one of the four people who hasn't played this game, (like me), it is now free for the taking.

I'm one of those 4 people. I loaded up steam on my laptop earlier today just for this. After spending the time to recover my old account, I discovered that I had Half Life 2 and CS:Source on there from several years back, and I can now download those for free as well. Score!

It's only free for two weeks. That's more than enough time to play it the one time it deserves.

I was under the impression that if you download it within the free period, you own it forever as if you had bought it.

I bought this the day it came out, and have played it a ridiculous amount of times, but this still makes me happy. Yay Valve! Yay! Very Happy

I couldn't quite understand the freeness.

If you download it before May 24th it is free.
If you download it after May 24th it costs money.

Once you download it, does it count as a game you own? So if you switch systems can you re-download it?

I imagine that it gets added to your Game Library just like any other game you purchase.

It does, but that isn't where the license would come from. In the account screen it shows:

Portal - Complimentary (Mac) - Complimentary

I am pretty sure that it is set for life since the STEAM client is also set this way. I personally have no other titles listed with Complimentary as their method of acquisition.

The other methods I have listed are "Steam Store" and "Retail"

Where did you get that idea from? Every other time Valve did this, it was a timed period or some huge discount like that one time they had the first Half-Life for $0.98.

Because it says "Portal used to cost money. Until May 24th, it's free. End of story."

Anyway it's been confirmed in various threads on steam forums that it's free forever (if you dl it before the deadline).

Also, proof: http://img100.imageshack.us/i/73528323.png/

So essentially you did buy it and the price was free.

Everything I have seen in the forums is confirming that if you download it one time on either Mac or PC platform, you will have it tied to your account as a full license.

In the account page it will look like this:

As long as the game is in that list, then you can play it.

That's a shame, because I was expecting it to be a lot more dynamic than it was.

In the event that the Weighted Companion Cube DOES speak, the Enrichment Center encourages you to disregard all of its advice.
