Hoooooooleeeeeeeeey shit folks, never have I read something that made me go "shit just got real" every single page. Lord. I have no idea how to talk about it without spoilers but if you have read them you know.
I would dump toxic waste in a sewer beneath a coastal village for fourty years until every baby born had cogenital defects just to make A Dance With Dragons get released.

Can't help it. Haven't you ever read a book where you have to flex your muscles twice a page because it is so intense? It is meth in novel form. I am just freaking out over how well defined characters are and how nuanced their motivations are and it just I just MMM.

Oh man I managed to not even say anything. Sorry my bad looks like I made a shitty post.
Anyhow, it is a fantasy novel, and it is way closer to low fantasy than high, and it is about political machinations and wars and shit.

ive heard many a good thing about this series. my only concern is that it might get too drawn out like the wheel of time books. does it suffer from that?

It is supposed to be seven books, four of which have been released. If you can not stand suspense that you can't resolve then do not start now because the suspense is killing me.

i read through them, and i liked them. i am curious to know what happens next, but, for me, it isn't a page turner that keeps me up past my bedtime. i do like how unpredictable it is.

Yea I can't believe we haven't seen DOD yet. It's been like 5 years now. I'd like to see this series get finished before Martin either dies or loses it.
My favorite character in the series is Tywin Lannister. Dude is a scary hardass.

I know it is obvious to like Tyrion but I mean Tyrion. Brienne is awesome too, I really like how good Martin is at writing women.
Tywin is a great example of characters who have established their character to the other characters already, so every single person has an opinion of him, which I find really interesting.

I don't like Tywin. Sure, he's a well constructed character, but I think he got his just desserts.
Tyrion is awesome, and Arya is kinda sweet in her own ferocious way. Daenerys is good too - I love the way she's developed from a pussy exile princess to a tough and clever queen. I just hope Martin doesn't snuff it (funny someone mentioned WoT, I hope this series doesn't end that way), someone needs to put a red hot poker up his arse.
@sidewaydriver: it's a fantasy book with very little fantasy (at first anyways). It's based on an alternate 1200s England where noble families are battling over thrones and glory. I don't think any description would do it justice because it's so deep.
Plus, there are lots of viewpoint characters (many of which are on the "bad" side) which means *anyone* can die. I can't tell you how bloody great that is. =D

I have had Game of Thrones set to record on my DVR for a few days now. I'm looking forward to it and hope that it is as good as the discussions about it make it out to be.

I'm interested in what you guys think of the show?
I'm enjoying it, but I feel like if I hadn't read the books, I'd have no idea what was going on. It seems like it would be kind of disjointed, because it jumps from plotline to plotline so abruptly. But I guess it's hard to look at it objectively when you've read the books and know all the "in between" stuff and backstory that's supposed to be there.
For those of you who haven't read the books.....what do you think? Is the plot hard to follow, or are you getting it well enough?

I like the show okay, but I'm a much bigger fan of the books (this happens a lot; take, for example, the former Walking Dead debacle on this forum). I feel as if the show has left some stuff out, and changed some things in ways it shouldn't have [SPOILER:99a06d2aa8]like no Lady Stoneheart at the end of the most recent season, or Jaime raping Cersei after Joffrey's death[/SPOILER:99a06d2aa8]
Still, Peter Dinklage is fucking amazing as Tyrion. To be fair, not sure who else they could've cast for the role. Certainly not Gary Oldman (see Tiptoes to understand reference if you're a fucking masochist).

In regards to your spoiler, aeonic, one of those things definitely did happen.
For me, I like some of the cuts that were made. By removing Edric Storm altogether, we got a lot of good scenes with Milesandre. Namely, her interactions with Gendry and Thoros.
