Bystander: Eh, who's that guy in the tower with a Kalishnikov?
Local: Oh that's just Fidler on the roof.

Well, I'd agree with you, except that castle-building is apparently against the law in England, he knew it was against the law, and he hid the building in an attempt to get around it. Your right to do anything ends the second you decide to say "fuck the rules!"
Now, if the guvment was trying to dick him out of his family castle, or if he really didn't know what he was doing was wrong and they're just now fucking with him, that's different. But this guy cheated, and he got caught. He should man up.

Can't he just raise the drawbridge and pour boiling oil down on the dozers when they come?

No, in England, you just have to lay down in the mud in front of them.

well apparently there was a law that if you live somewhere for four years, it is considered your residence. So he found a loophole. But the government decided to enforce one law and not the other. And that's not fair.

Any man who builds his own castle in this day and age should have sexual priviliges to all the maidens in the fiefdom.

I don't see why it should be against the law to build a castle.

If you've been living in it for 4 years, then you get grandfathered in, yeah. But he used deception to get those 4 years, and these laws almost always have an exception for that (and according to the article, this one does). If 4 1/2 years ago he said "Yeah, I've got a castle, fuckers!", and only just now did they try and so something about it, that's also different.
I still say he knew what he was doing, he knew it was against the law, now he fucking pays for it.
...on a side note, how do you hide a fucking castle anyways?

You build it on top of a swamp. It will sink into the swamp, perfectly concealing it. (although you better pray to Allah that it doesn't burn down, fall over and then sink into the swamp)

Big deal. Here in Brazil some politician built his own castle and also had to deal with the law... because he used public money for the construction of said castle!

This is an another point. If you're able to hide a castle for 4 years, you deserve to be able to keep it. And it said he did it by surrounding it with bales of hay. BALES OF FUCKING HAY.
"Hi guy, what's behind that giant pile of hay?"
"Oh, nothing."
"I completely believe you. Conversation over."

Okay, I will agree with you in principle that if you can hide a fucking castle for 4 years, you deserve to keep it.
I still think it's a lot like running from the cops when they try to pull you over, and when they knock on your door a week later to talk to you, you say, "Hey, I got away, so I'm in the clear!"

Is there a statute of limitations over there?* If so, how long are they for the castle law? Probably should have waited for them to run out before revealing he had a castle, as most authorities aren't too happy with loop holes.
*Yeah, don't know many English/British Laws

I read about it in the paper.
The hiding of the castle is sort of like squatters rights in a way:
http://www.propertylawuk.net/adversepossessionsquatters.html
What happened though from what i gather is that. The castle was built and after a period of four years of no building work (since it was built without planning permission) it was legal. So the owners decided to remove the scenery on the back disguising the castle from people.
However some legal person said that the removal of the like hay and stuff on the back which was disguising it counted as "building work" so that four year period without building was revoked.
So in that respect it was a kind of dickish move by the UK property developers. The UK does have ridiculously strict planning laws though so you can see why they cracked down on it.
To Nihilisticglee - there is no magic castle law.

The article explains this...the limitation is 4 years.
Thing is, the guy hid it for 4 years, then revealed it.
Statutes of limitations always start counting from the time the offended party becomes aware of the situation, or reasonably should have. It's not so much a statute of limitation here, but it appears to be the same idea.

Hell, if you can hide anything for four years, you should be able to keep it. That's a long time to keep things under wrap.
