We've already got a Winter Olympics thread, but this is just pure gold (no pun intended)

http://sports.yahoo.com/olympics/vancouver/blog/fourth_place_medal/post/In-Plushenko-s-mind-and-website-he-s-the-plat?urn=oly,221408

Pissed off Russian figure skater Evgeni Plushenko, who won silver in the Vancouver Olympics, has awarded himself a platinum medal on his own website. He claims that the gold-winning American skater Evan Lysacek shouldn't have won because he didn't attempt a quadruple-axel in his program. Vladimir Putin himself has claimed that Plushekno had the best program at the Vancouver Olympics.

Shit is getting real in the world of men's figure skating. I can't believe I'm actually looking forward to the next event where these two fill face each other.

What would Brian Boitano do if he were here right now? I'm sure he'd kick an ass or two......that's what Brian Boitano'd do.

It's the new wave Fischer vs. Spassky. Some people just can't get over the Cold War, I guess...

... At first I thought he was just overreacting because quads are hard to do and he still lost so he's pissed etc. etc., but now I think I'll just laugh at him.

Bullshit. Female or no, certainly you can appreciate the fact that a program like this:

is not effeminate in the least. On the contrary...yowza. Nod

Ugh... Your post reminded me of that ice skater who got cut in the face by her partner's skate in a competition. It looked really damn painful.

All I know is that I wouldn't want Vladimir Puting eyeing me, even if I'm not Russian. Now instead of crowbars, skating rivals will have to start looking out for poison-tipped umbrellas.

That was bad. Sad The worst was US speed skater JR Celski though...the fell wrong and slashed his leg with those really long speed skate blades...came damn close to nicking his femoral artery, and nearly bled out on the ice as it was. He's healed now (won a bronze just a couple days ago), but yeah. Skaters of all stripes, be they speed, hockey or figure, are a lot more hardcore than most people give them credit for.

They realize that a majority of the population will never respect them or take them seriously because of their flame pants and pink fluffy shirts, so that is bad ass.

This is just stupid. Awarding yourself a medal like that just makes you look like a total asshole.

Not for the squeamish...but for those of you who say that sports with blades are dangerous... as someone who has seen my buddy get sliced across his chin with a skate blade... I'd have to agree. So would Richard Zednik.

...and Clint Malarchuk.

Thou, because I am wroth, be not dismayed, for I shall win the strife, whoever circle round within for the defence. This their insolence is not new, for of old they used it at a less secret gate, which still is found without a bolt. Above it thou didst see the dead inscription; and already on this side of it
descends the steep, passing without escort through the circles,
One such that by him the city shall be opened to us.

As for speed skating or figure skating I'm obviously joking somewhat but in all seriousness, I do respect what they do and realize it takes a lot of effort and training and what not, but it will never be my cup of tea. Men trying their hardest to perform womanly activities and dress as effeminate as possible will never be my cup of tea. I mean I respect that the Nazi's had a big ass army but I don't have to like them for it.

This is my viewpoint as well. Like that one skater who's all upset now because a few announcers questioned his masculinity (forget his name). If you don't want to be perceived as gay, well......you're not doing yourself any favors by dressing in attire that could only be described as such.

Josh and Ice, the skater you're trying to think of is Johnny Weir. Unlike most male figure skaters, he *deliberately* embraces that...overly feminine/androgynous thing. What the commentators said really WAS nasty, and in very poor taste, and also, Weir wasn't criticizing them for insulting him (he loves controversy and loves trying to shock people), rather, he was criticizing the way they were making it sound like it was a band thing to be and/or act gay. And I agree with him wholeheartedly on that. If you're not comfortable with him, recuse yourself from commenting on his skating. Don't make comments (in a globally broadcast Olympic competition no less!) that make you sound like a homophobic asshole.

I never did understand why people find figure skating to be specifically feminine/gay though. Honestly. (I mean, Weir doesn't count because he does that stuff deliberately just...because he can, I guess.) I know, especially in the past, that a lot of the guys' costumes have been a bit flamboyant by male clothing standards, but good grief. The jumps they do require ridiculous amounts of strength, as do the spins, and the footwork is ALL technique. Its also exceedingly rare to see a male figure skater execute a traditionally feminine type of spiral (glide) or spin, because most just don't have the flexibility for it.

I dunno. Maybe I've just watched it for so many years I've just lost touch with how the non-obsessives see it. But I very rarely watch a man skate and think, "dude, he's moving like a girl." (In the same way I very rarely watch women's hockey and think, "dude, she's acting like a man.")

*shrug*
