And, having gone to Vancouver last week, I can tell you that these are not your regular Canadian hockey fans. I got off the skytrain and a bunch of Canadians started chanting "U-S-A! You are gay!" to some Americans. The Olympics is an event, the cool thing to do. There's too many fake fans in those stands.
And yes Hawk, they were chanting Luu |
Ross! My brotha from the north! Brodeur and Curtis Joseph. Both very technically sound.. perfect footwork.

Thou, because I am wroth, be not dismayed, for I shall win the strife, whoever circle round within for the defence. This their insolence is not new, for of old they used it at a less secret gate, which still is found without a bolt. Above it thou didst see the dead inscription; and already on this side of it
descends the steep, passing without escort through the circles,
One such that by him the city shall be opened to us. |

Proud of the women, but now it's time for the men's Semi's. There's a possibility Canada and the U.S could play in the finals but Slovak could suprise, I hope not though.

Gonna trip AND slash you with my hockey stick for that, fool! Just (kidding as well, of course )
SO HAPPY FOR THE CANADIAN WOMEN!!! God I hope that game ends up on In-Demand...I don't want to watch just the highlights.
Stupid Army. Don't they know better than to schedule an all-day manuver during a huge Olympic hockey game????

That game today really felt like a "so Canada can score... big whoop... watch this" from the Americans.
God damn they turned it on.

Holy shit. Did anyone see the end of the CAN-SLO game? Slovakia turned it on hard at the end, almost pulled it out.
I'll say this: for all you Canada fans- you're lucky Pavol Demitra can't hit a wide open net. Twice.

Man, speed skating is exciting stuff. I've never sat down and watched a full race before until today but it is pretty cool.

Apolo Ohno is a true American.
He shoves someone out of his way to get what he wants, and when he gets called on it, he says it's someone else's fault for catching him.
(Honestly, I think the Canuck took a dive, but it doesn't really matter if he did or not. Don't wanna get DQ'ed, don't touch the guy)

Well, in fairness to Ohno, the EXACT same thing happened to him in a qualifying race last week, and the Canadian didn't get DQ'ed for it.
I actually agree with Apollo that its a bullshit call. I'm a big fan of speed skating, watch it quite a bit, and the call was extremely weak-sauce. Contact is part of the game, just like hockey or football. Now yes, there can be UNFAIR contact, but it was pretty clear Apollo didn't cause that crash. Really, I don't think the DQ was necessary. (Although on another note, I was SO happy to see Charles Hamlin finally get a medal--and a gold at that!--on home ice!)
What I DON'T agree with was the dickish way Apollo implied that it was Canadian favoritism that got him DQed. It was a bad call, but that was just unnecessary. (Not to mention that Hamlin's win wasn't affected in the slightest either way--he had skated a clean race and was clearly the winner.)

Canada with 12 golds at the moment, leading the games in gold medals. I didn't think we'd be doing quite this well thus war, the Canadian women have been bringing in a lot of golds.
The gold medal hockey game is tomorrow, I can't wait. I really hope we win but those damn Amerc's have been excellent so far.
Even if Canada loses, the U.S. coach and GM are the coach and GM of the Toronto Maple Leafs(my favorite team unfortunately) and they have Phil Kessel so the Leafs would actually have a couple winners in the organization!

Unless you could watch a video with multiple angles and slowdown, this is bullshit. I've watched the end of the race about thirty times and no way is it pretty clear.
Ohno touched Tremblay for at least 1 full second, including at the start of the last turn. Tremblay fell, and contact is only allowed as long as you don't impede the opponent, so he got DQ'ed.
Tremblay might have simply lost his balance, but we don't know how much Ohno leaned on him, and I doubt making a turn while someone is leaning against you is easy.

Ohno had been lucky all day anyways. People were falling all around him, so it's only logical someone he brushed against went down two (and another guy for good measure).
Again, whether or not he caused the guy to fall isn't relevant. He touched him, he fell, he can get DQed. Just because the option to NOT DQ the guy was there doesn't mean the DQ is a bad call.

What's funny about this is that the Korean actually fell on his own at the same time Ohno might possibly have caused Tremblay's fall.

Just so you know, I expect everyone who can have their computer in the same room as their tv to be in the chat tomorrow at 12:15 PST. Unless you are not from this continent, then you are exempt.

This is fair enough. I still think it was a bad call, based on the way the judges had been calling such infractions up to that point. A Canadian skater (Hamlin maybe? I don't remember) did almost the exact same thing to Apollo in a semis-heat last week and, while he didn't fall, it did cause him to slip and loose his qualifying spot. The Canadian wasn't DQed for that. And, there have been plenty of other instances of guys keeping their balance on each other in the exact same way without getting kicked.
Even after seeing all the replays, it *really* didn't look like he caused the fall to me, and I still don't think he deserved the DQ. That said, it IS a subjective thing, the refs made the call they thought best, and that's how it goes. (And just to completely clarify, I'm not trying to be argumentative or sound irritated and/or otherwise overly invested in this; just enjoying the discussion cause I like the sport.)

First time the Americans ever trailed in this tournament, and they're losing 2-0 in the second period.
It's the first game for them that's actually hard, so let's see if trailing will give them a boost or discourage them.

Canada tried to keep their lead for the whole third period and played defensively, which is the best way to let the opponent come back.
The hell you want to win if the puck is in territory all the fucking time!?
Anyway, 2-2 and going into overtime.

Was that scripted? I can't believe Crosby scored the winner. Like him or hate him, he'll always be remembered in Canadian hockey.
What a game, Miller was fantastic and that last minute Parise goal was clutch. Almost a reverse of the World Junior gold medal game.

I'm gonna withhold my disappointment for 48 hours, then come return to this discussion thread with plenty of comments. For now, I'll just tip my hat to the Canadian squad.
Good game, boys. On both sides.
