Just picked this up (it came out today) and have not even started it yet. Although I can't wait to get it going. The gameplay looks pretty fantastic, way more frenetic than the original.
Anyways, anyone else picking this up/what are your thoughts??
I know the hardcore System Shock fanboys won't even want to give this game a chance, but I loved the mood and atmosphere of the original Bioshock enough to warrant me purchasing the sequel.

I was considering this game. I've read that the singleplayer is just as good as the first, with the multiplayer being pretty good. What platform did you get this on?

I'll be getting it eventually once it goes on sale. I never buy games as soon as they come out because they're always a bit pricey. A little patience and you can usually get them 50% off after a few months.
I just played Bioshock the other week for the first time and I loved it. What a great game. Bioshock 2 should be even better as they didn't screw with the formula at all, improved the parts that were criticized in the first game, and add a bunch of new stuff. Can't go wrong.

I should have it from Gamefly for the Xbox 360 in a few days.

I will agree that the narrative doesn't seem quite as strong at this point as the original but it is still very good. The gameplay is all there and then some.
I thought playing with the Big Daddy would feel overpowered, but that isn't really the case at all, it's actually quite balanced as you find yourself taking on multiple opponents simultaneously.
Diggin it hard so far.

I picked this up myself being that I loved the original, I just haven't had a chance to give it a go yet. I will say to anybody not sure if they would like these games, I'm not a fan of FPS's, and the only reason I tried the first Bioshock was because I was bored and saw it on sale for $15. But the game really is a great game and the atmosphere makes it even better. I'm pretty excited to start playing it later tonight. I picked it up on the 360, and if anyone else here did too, feel free to add me on XBLA and maybe we can play online some night if the online portion is any fun. My GamerTag is in my sig.

I just got done playing, and played up to the end of the first level I guess you could call it. Up to the point where you unlock your first storyline achievement, and it's pretty good so far, I know I'm going to love it like the first one. I decided to try a match online to see how it was before stopping, and my one match turned into three hours of playing. I'm usually not into FPS's, especially online, but damn was online fun. It may have been made to be more fun though because my roommate has the game too and we were playing together, but either way, the Civil War mode was great.

I take back what I said about the narrative, it's actually progressing rather nicely.
I find the game to be more linear than the last, but not in a bad way at all, it just helps with the progression, you don't really feel boxed in.
Also, the power ups you get with the Big Daddy are really getting more and more badass.

I just finished the game, and even though it felt very similar to Bioshock 1, it was an amazing experience. The graphics, even though I'm not one of those guys for graphics, were better than Bioshock 1. The story was fucking phenomenal, and me being the nice guy got the good/best ending, and it was really sweet and kind of heart breaking. Most of the plasmids were the same, but there were a few that were different and they all still felt very fresh. I love the "Little Sister" moment later in the game as well.

I beat it the other night. I will say the original Bioshock was one of my favorite games of all time so I had very high hopes for this sequel. The story was weak compared to the first game. Delta was a boring and lifeless character (much like Jack I suppose, but that made sense the first time). The Mark Meltzer storyline was far more intriguing than the main story and he would have been a much better main character IMO. I kept waiting and waiting for a big plot twist to redeem the story and it never happened. The lack of a final boss was also a disappointment. Like the first game, the difficulty curve is opposite of how it should be. It starts out really hard and by the end of the game it's ridiculously easy. I played on Hard with Vita Chambers disabled and it was a joke how little of a threat enemies posed in the last couple levels because of how overpowered my plasmids and tonics had made me. Gameplay wise it was an improvement on the original, but the storyline and atmosphere just weren't satisfying enough, especially considering the amount of time they had to work on this.

I kinda like the concept of silent protagonist's (especially ones that you play as).
Also, they cannot give the characters to much personality because you define them with your action.
I thought the story was pretty good in the game and the supplements the first story well.

I'm playing it and I agree the narrative is a bit weak. The story is all right but when you need to go out of your way to get Andrew Ryan's views across that tells you that the story needs work. His ideals were addressed quite nicely in the original Bioshock. In the sequel they seem to go out of their way to explain them. However the ability to use a weapon and a plasmid at the same time does make for some cool gameplay. However the survival horror element is not there since they made it more like a shooter. Still they could have done a lot worse with Bioshock 2.

I can honestly say I'm a little let down by this one. I beat it with literally no effort at all, and that is certainly not a good quality in a game. I'm definitely glad I played it, but it really didn't hold up well enough to be called a full fledged sequel, in my opinion. It was just soooo easy.

Play on the hardest difficulty and shoot for some of achievements/trophies. That is what I am doing now, the game is considerably more difficult under these conditions.

Not really. I got every single player achievement (with the exception of 9-irony) on my first run without really trying to. The only challenging part was the first Big Sister fight in Ryan Amusements and I only died a lot there trying to figure out what worked best against her. Once you get Fountain of Youth and Drill Vampire it's damn near impossible to die, regardless of the difficulty. I've noticed this is an issue in many western RPGs (ie. Fallout 3, Bioware games, Borderlands). Enemies don't properly scale with your own abilities and by the end of the game it feels like you're playing with god mode enabled.

I finished it a week or so ago. Loved it. It contrasted collectivism well with the individualism shown in the first game.
What I wanted more of? Little Sister playtime!
I also didn't care that the game was "too easy." Did I have fun? Yes. That's what matters. Will I play it again? Absolutely.

Agreed, at the very least I found it very enjoyable. I don't regret the purchase.

I'm glad it's a good game. I won't be getting it because I honestly think Bioshock was too good to spawn a sequel.
But then again, I don't make videogames for a living...
