Though the surprises were sprung a little early from a quickly-pulled interview video, Microsoft's keynote tonight at the Consumer Electronics Show confirmed some long-standing rumors of coming services for the Xbox 360. The big announcement of the night had to be the new "Game Room," which had been spotted in consumer surveys last year. The Game Room is a virtual arcade for Avatars to arrange and customize, featuring classic arcade games in models of their original cabinets. Konami, Atari, and Intellivision are on-board to support the service, and new games will be launching every week after the initial launch this spring. Arcade cabinets will cost between 240 and 400 Microsoft Points ($3-5), or can be played once for 40 MS Points (50 cents).
We also finally got official confirmation that Natal is due in the holiday season of 2010. This isn't exactly surprising, since everyone from industry analysts to developers and publishers have been talking about a holiday release. But it does mean we'll probably see its finalized name and any game reveals coming sometime soon, possibly at E3 in June.
A few other gaming-related tidbits were dropped during the presentation. Owners of Halo 3: ODST will get access to the Halo Reach beta in spring. And, not to be outdone by Sony's 3D push, the company showed off Batman: Arkham Asylum running in 3D on a gaming PC |

This intrigues me, especially that Konami, Atari and Intellivision are on board. *Drools*

The so-called Game Room is retarded. XBLA already offers ports of arcade games. So now, they're going to offer the same service, except instead of selecting the game you want to play from a menu, your Fake Mii is going to wander around a virtual arcade looking for it instead. SUPER COOL! Except, not.

If Nintendo announced the same thing you would be all over it. I don't have XBox Live so I don't care either way, I just think it's kind of neat. Of course I would rather them spend more time on actual new games instead of doing minor tweakages for the presentation of a game that doesn't even take up a megabyte of space.
Like with Megaman 9, I fucking loved it. When they said they were doing another 8-Bit Megaman I was like "Man..can't we just have a new Megaman game?" It just bothers me, because it obviously does not take that long to make an 8-Bit game anymore, especially considering they probably have 40 more people working on them now than they did in the 80's. I'm just starting to get bored with it.

Not really. As much as I love the Pinball Hall of Fame games, I hate that you have to walk around a virtual arcade to get to them. Even worse, there are random games in the background that you can't even play.
And the fact that they're charging 50 cents for a single play is bullshit. When I got a REAL arcade, no one's charging more than a quarter for anything made before 1995, unless it's Dragon's Lair or something. And those arcades have electricity bills. This is pure profit for Microsoft and their partners. Also, how is Intellivision involved? I don't recall Intellivision ever having arcade consoles, nor parent company Mattel. And besides, all the good Intellvision games are included on the Intellivision Lives compilation. And oddly enough, Intellivision Lives took place in a virtual pizzeria and you played the games on arcade cabinets. What?

Yeah, I mean they aren't getting my money regardless. No one will pay 50 cents for a single play of anything, that's out of control.

By the time this Natal thing comes out, we'll be ready for the next generation of Xbox. It sounds like a crock of shit to me, anyway.

Me too. Motion controls are not the future of video gaming people. Please, please stop going in this direction. The Wii was successful, not because of the motion controls, but because it was half the price and marketed to families.

I should hope so. If Wii 2: HD and Xbox 3 aren't shown at E3, then those companies have serious delusions about being able to sustain their current hardware against the PS3.

True. I was never impressed with it, though. I thought the Boxing was horrible, and the Baseball and Gold were boring. Bowling is decent. The only one I would really call "fun" was Tennis. But even then it wasn't enough to make me want to buy it. The other Wii games I've played didn't interest me much either. But, none of this is really on topic.

If it is an arcade why is Intellivision involved? Mattel Electronics never made any Arcade cabinets.

The boxing was fantastic! Boxing and bowling were the best, followed by tennis. Golf and baseball were basically tech demos. The home run derby was fun though.

Boxing is frustrating until you realize it's not 1:1 speed and movement.

bump for new news:

Capcom and Microsoft Have "Many Surprises" Coming on January 26
Speculation began to rage after the above image showed up on the Xbox Japan website yesterday. Although you might not be able to see it now, Capcom confirmed on their blog that there will be unveils at an event next Tuesday, January 26. But while the image (via andriasang.com) suggests that it might simply be the announcement of a single new game (something that's likely to be a timed exclusive on the Xbox 360, if not an outright exclusive), the blog referred to "all the delicious secrets" that they have in store, so there could be much more than a single game to show off.
Even better than that, the blog also promises that "some of the news will be of interest to a global gamer audience." That's a pretty ambiguous statement, but at least we know this isn't a Japan-only announcement. But what could it possibly be? Resident Evil with Natal support? Something to do with Super Street Fighter IV? A new Devil May Cry? Let us know what you're expecting (or hoping) to see at the event in the comments section. |

regarding microsofts game room:
| Quote: |
XBLA Games Won't Transfer to Game Room
With Microsoft's upcoming Game Room feature for Xbox Live members designed to replicate the feel of old-school arcades, you would think that would mean any old-school arcade games you already own on Xbox Live Arcade would carry over, wouldn't you? You would? Well you're wrong.
According to Game Informer, they spoke with a Microsoft representative who told them owning an Xbox Live Arcade game -- despite the word arcade being in the title -- won't allow you to play that game in your Game Room. Instead, if you really want to play that copy of Centipede in your virtual arcade, you'll have to re-purchase the specific Game Room version.
The reasoning, according to Microsoft, is that the XBLA versions of these games are "enhanced" re-releases, while the Game Room versions will be direct, untouched ports of the original titles. This is also why they'll cost less than most XBLA games as well, at 240 Microsoft points ($3) to own them on your 360 or PC, or 400 ($5) to own them on both. |
