COPAKE, N.Y. – State police in New York say an upstate dairy farmer shot and killed 51 of his milk cows in his barn before turning the rifle on himself.
State police found the body of 59-year-old Dean Pierson in his Copake barn on Thursday. A visitor found a note Pierson had left on the barn door that said not to come in and to call police.
State police would only say that Pierson was having personal issues.
The Columbia County hamlet of Copake is about 115 miles north of New York City.
Local farmers buried the cows outside the barn Friday. They would not discuss Pierson or what had happened, but one of the men said these are hard times to be a farmer. |

he must've had a lot of patience. you know how hard it is to kill a cow? that scene in Me, Myself & Irene wasnt exaggerating all that much. its pretty fucking tough. and 51 of them?! sweet jesus. thats a lot of bullets, unless he was all-pro at killing cows.
he probably upped his skill points in 'cow killing'

They BURIED them?
What a fucking waste. They couldn't have been that deteriorated after a few days in the cold weather, perfectly good dog food gone to waste.

Why bury them? That's a total waste of food. But then again, maybe they weren't suitable for food. Which would explain why the farmer shot them in the first place. But that DOESN'T explain why he would kill himself afterwards.
Maybe he feared some sort of weird disease was beginning in the cows, sort of like the Mad Cow Disease. But, I'm just thinking out loud. It's probaby just a case of the crazies. As usual.

I really don't know much about farming or cows, but I think I heard some where that cows used for milk aren't/can't be used for food and eating. It says it was a dairy farm, so maybe that's why the cows were buried and not used for food.

First you put yourself in the dead celebrities of 2010 thread, and now this. Are you trying to tell us something Syd?

I'm pretty sure I listed myself in the 2009 thread as well. Definitely I did in the 2009 deadpool.
And no. I just have a very dark sense of humor.

Tsis was my very first thought too.
And, cows aren't THAT hard to kill if you have a rifle lol. One close range shot to the head and they'll die and/or bleed out just like any other animal. Poor things. And poor guy.

Make sure you Youtube that shit... Hari-Kiri gets a lot of views...
The thing about that it's a hard time to be a farmer kind of strikes me as peculiar. I mean sure a gallon of milk for a private farmer is hell, but it seems like he had a deeper meaning then offing his cows and himself.

It's a tough economy, and small farmers get fucked over by the superfarms. He wasn't doing well financially, so he killed himself. He killed his cows first, because he didn't want anyone else to swoop in and be like "Hey, free cows" and benefit from his misfortune. There's absolutely nothing mysterious or confusing about why he did what he did.

^ Exactly. I mean, they were dairy cows after call. Contrary to what some belief, they CAN, in fact, be slaughtered for food (unless they have certain levels of hormones and shit in them, but a small farmer like this guy probably didn't pump his cows full of that stuff.) Cattle slaughtering methods are quite nasty, as is being a milk cow on one of the super farms Syd mentioned. Neither is a fate a farmer like him would want to inflict on cows he had probably raised himself. So, he put them out of their misery. Sucks, but like Syd said, very understandable.

my buddy speculated that the guy had sex w/one of the cows. then he went nuts after he realized what he did and started to imagine that the cow cheated on him. unfortunately, by that time, he couldnt tell the cows apart, so he killed them all.

A dilemma that would have easily been solved had he buggered them all.
