I've been reading a lot about people who, in order to get the feeling they've maximized their enjoyment out of a game, play through it by imposing sometimes ridiculous restrictions on themselves while playing through it again. Sometimes these can be pretty epic, like playing through the original Legend of Zelda without ever obtaining the sword.

In that spirit, I've decided to do the same thing. I'm not the world's best Guitar Hero/Rock Band kind of guy, but this is my challenge for now: Get as far through the song "Painkiller" by Judas Priest, on Expert, using Breakneck Speed, as I can. My friends and I have all tried this, my best friend's record was 48%. I beat it at 49%, then tried again and managed to make it to 59%, which now stands as the record between us.

Anyone else try to do this kind of thing? Describe it here. What kind of challenges do you impose on yourself?

Not only is that not right, that's not even wrong. It's a meaningless statement. Saying something is "one molecule away" from plastic is like saying a farm is one letter away from a fart. Water is "one molecule away" from being explosive hydrogen gas.

Good luck man. Do you have a video camera? Maybe you can record it for us.

neat idea for a topic.

i have tried to beat all zeldas w/out getting any extra hearts (not counting zelda II since that game is fucking hard)

i have tried to beat all the races in the original waverace 64 by riding the jet ski backwards. sadly, i forgot how to do that now.

win any mario kart cup in 150cc w/out using any items.

I like to go through Super Mario World without the cape, and just use fire flowers.

Similar to user, I always liked to try and beat circuits in Wave Race 64 by constantly doing the handstand. You have to be careful with jumps, but it's still fun to me.

Not technically the same...but I like doing Master Save files in newer games...sometimes it's a pain in the ass that you have to manipulate glitches or something else in the game in order to proceed in certain areas: ala Grand Theft Auto.

I once tried to play punch out blindfolded, with the balance board and the retarded boxing gloves, after smoking an ounce of AK-47 to the dome. I sprained my ankle, broke a coffee table, and ripped my ex girlfriend's shirt.

It was awesome.

Umm, I like playing Tetris where you can't rotate the blocks... I think my record is about thirty lines.

I beat Mega Man X5 without beating any bosses, getting any armor pieces, getting any subtanks, and without getting any hearts for your life bar.

Shake it, Quake it, Space Kaboom.

I overplayed Wario Land on the gameboy so much that I once beat the game upside down with the contrast down so I could barely see it without ever collecting a powerup and finished with 0 coins.

In RPGs, I always like to hang on to my starting equipment (or just weapons)and try to beat the last boss with it.

I never bought armor in Phantasy Star 3 after I played for just an hour or so. For some reason, I was convinced armor didn't work.

i used to play games on my gameboy color back in the day until the battery ran out. normally i would only do this when the battery was showing red, so i would try to start a new and try to beat it before the batteries completely died out. that was fun

I played Zelda II on an actual NES with the controller upside down. I only beat the first two palaces.

Actually... you just made me remember I held the controller correctly when I wanted a challenge in NES games. I always hold it upside down.

Also, though it's not exactly the same thing, I like to download "hard mode" hacks, mostly for RPGs. As long as it's not bullshit hard I usually love the added challenge.
