I've been debating getting one of these, too. Looking forward to results.
Generally speaking, how reliable are these things, anyway? Can you totally depend on them, or should you still print out a Mapquest just to be safe?

Doesn't your iPhone already have a Maps app?

I am guessing it is a gift.
And they are pretty reliable, once in a while they may get a little pissy but they do recover and get you on your way. And they are VERY user-friendly...like punch in an address and press go easy. Not to mention if you are in unfamiliar territory (vacation, work) you can pull up the closest eateries, gas stations, attractions, etc. Well worth owning.

Well, as Rydog just guessed, it's not for me, it's a Christmas gift. I want a respectable GPS, but I don't want to spend more than $160 on it. It has to be a Garmin though.

I would have to say yes...and it is actually $3.90 cheaper, and I don't know if a higher model number equals better product or not....but that amazon link has an ad for a 285WT Model for $140.

Anyone have any other advice? I'd like to order one within the next hour....
I'll probably order the one GPF suggested I get from NewEgg from Amazon unless anyone has any compelling arguments otherwise.

Syd, I should probably just note that I looked at features and reviews to pick that one.
I have an in-dash one on my Civic and my other car doesn't have GPS, so I'm not 100% familiar with Garmin's stuff. I bought one for my dad about 6 months ago and he has enjoyed it. It was a Costco purchase though. I think it was a $500 GPS we got for about $250.

I ordered the one you suggested, except I got it off Amazon instead of NewEgg because I have an Amazon credit card and I get double reward points on everything I order through them. I looked over the features and it seemed solid, and it had a lot of favorable user reviews. I think it will work out nicely.

Yeah, I just checked and I actually have that model except it isn't a wide screen and it is fine. And it cost $300 last year so I guess it is a good grab now.

If anyone cares, I just ordered the 255W (the second one Syd listed in his initial post) from Best Buy's website. They had it for $129.99 and 99 cents for shipping.
Can't wait to give it a shot.
