A couple of hours ago, I put in a call to a random Nintendo representative to give a message to whoever would be in charge of handling a certain task. A little while before making the call, I discovered that there were plans to release Final Fantasy IV on the Virtual Console under its falsified number of II, but no plans to release the real II on this side of the Pacific. The message I left is as follows: "If you're going to release Final Fantasy IV on the VC, release it under its true number. Likewise, If you're going to release a game called Final Fantasy II on the VC, make sure its the real II that originally came out on the Famicom in 1988. The same goes for III and VI." Of course, I'm afraid that those who would handle such matters will completely ignore me, so I'd like my message to come from more people. I figure that eventually, they will listen to those who wish as I wish. Thanks in advance to anyone who reinforces my message.

They won't listen. If you were running a multi-billion dollar company and making hundreds of decisions a day around a giant table with 25 other people in a board room all concerned about the bottom line, would you give a shit about what some douchebag and his friends on a message board wanted? Of course not.
When I ran a gaming marathon website last year, I remember a gaming group ran a weekend long marathon featuring all three Mother (Earthbound) games and their goal was to flood Nintendo with requests to release Earthbound on the VC, something Nintendo couldn't ignore. Their marathon was really popular and thousands of people called NOA over that weekend, and guess what? Still no Earthbound for the VC.
There's even an Earthbound-centric website dedicated to doing anything they can to get EB on the VC, and they officially gave up the fight in February.
So yeah, a couple of dudes complaining about the Final Fantasy numbering isn't going to make a lick of difference I'm afraid.

People who buy from the VC are generally repurchasing games they already own. It is possible that the majority of Americans who played FFIV as FFII remember it as FFII. I'm not saying it is the right choice, but I am guessing they have a lot more statistical data that proves why this is the right decision.

They won't change the numbers but instead they're going to release the original Final Fantasy II as Final Fantasy: The Lost Levels.

This.
Also, try Square. It's their game. Complaining to Nintendo about it isn't gonna do much.

The ROM itself should remain unaltered from its original SNES release. So the title screen should say Final Fantasy II. However, it should be listed on the Shop Channel as FF4. It's only fair. The game that should be listed as Super Mario Bros. 2 (Japan) is listed as Super Mario Bros: The Lost Levels.

i think listing it as what it was in america is fine. as soon as yo uread the prodict description and see anything involving cecil, rosa, kain, ect., you'd know what you're buying.

It's a lose/lose situation. Either they call it Final Fantasy IV and miss out on sales to casual fans/gamers who remember playing it as FF2 back in the day, but haven't kept up with the Final Fantasy naming situation, or they call it FF2 and miss out on sales to people who love the game as FF4.
Obviously, they're more interested in selling it to casual gamers. You know why? Because casual gamers are fucking idiots and they'll actually buy it. They see Final Fantasy 2 on the Wii Shop Channel and think to themselves: "8 dollars for a digital copy of a game I used to own, now with possible with emulation issues and/or content removed due to licensing issues? OH BOY, I'M GONNA BUY THAT!" Meanwhile, a normal gamer looks at that and thinks: "Eh, I already have the ROM and the GBA version. Pass."

They have to cater to the casual fan with this. The casual fan will only prob. no it as II. And for the people who actually know the deal with the numbering as well as roms, etc, if they want to buy it on Wii, I doubt that this would stop them.

Moon Justice is too good of a title not to use. I'm going to use it for a movie. The movie will take place in 1978 in an alternate reality where man had colonized the moon by 1975 following the 1969 moon landing. It is basically going to be a lunar version of Lethal Weapon.

They should call it II but put IV in parentheses. And whoever doesn't know about the whole FF numbering wouldn't care about any FF

I especially like the "fans of the truth" title for this thread, like its going to rock your little delusional world of gaming to the point where you walk out of the cave where you've been watching the shadows dance this whole time and look bravely out into wide open for the first time and exclaim "FREEEEE!".
Instead of what it really is, which is jprime whining to no effect to nintendo about something he didn't really like, and then telling us about it. Specifically about the number thing of final fantasy, which is pretty much the equivalent of aggressively correcting someone every time they mention "ATM machine", cause whahay, its a redundant acronym like PIN number!

You raise an excellent point. If you're going to release a sequel, you should make it clear when you release the thing that it's a sequel to.

Jprime, exactly where did you find out that Nintendo is putting the II version of IV on the VC?

They should release it as II, but make it the harder version like IV actually is. That'll really fuck with casual gamers. They'll be like "Fuck, I don't remember this game being that hard!"

Well, there are actual three version of the game between America and Japan:
Final Fantasy IV (hardest)
Final Fantasy II (medium)
Final Fantasy IV Easytype (easiest)
Final Fantasy V was almost released TWICE on the SNES in North America, cancelled both times. First, it was going to be localized as Final Fantasy III, but that fell through. Then after FF6 became FF3, FF5 was going to be Final Fantasy Extreme.
