Wow was this a fun movie! I recently watched it through the streaming portion of Netflix. I first saw this on HBO back in early 1995. I could imagine how hard of a sell this was to Hollywood executives. "There is a bomb on a bus and most of the action takes place on the bus." However the action is great and the suspenseful scenes are awesome. Too bad the sequel was horrible.

Speed 2 sucked. The first one is still exciting and Dennis Hopper is way quotable.

I watched this right after I watched Dumb and Dumber, and I was sad to see Harry get blown up.

I probably wouldn't enjoy it now since Mythbusters busted the bus turn.

Watch the episode. They busted the idea that you need to move everyone to one side of the bus to keep the bus from flipping. They were able to easily make the turn, regardless of where the passengers were, and they had to SERIOUSLY unbalance the bus and make it top-heavy to get it to flip.
They did bust the jump, though (duh!).

This movie was sooo far fetched. Sandra Bullock laments about how she needs her car and that she loves her car. My guess is that she never takes public transportation(like most people in LA). How are we supposed to believe that she's on a first name basis with the bus driver?

There was like a small side joke about that. Sandra Bullock's character left Keanu's character from the first one because he was with the swat team or what ever the hell it was, since he kept getting put into danger. Instead she started going out with a beach bike cop, who eventually joined the swat unit or something... you know it's a terrible movie when even Keanu Reeves says "Whoa, this sequel about a boat... it sucks man"

This is so, SO true. I still can't figure out how they got the likes of Willem Dafoe into this piece of garbage. He must have owed somebody something. I mean, I know he goes for all kinds of movies...but Speed 2? And Sandra Bullock is the hero? Dude, you SO have more talent (and better taste) than that. (That said, he did his best with what he was given and was actually quite good.)
The original Speed WAS fun. Goofy, but fun. The premise was interesting, the action was good, and they executed it well. Not one to re-watch a bunch, but its kind of like a Jean-Claude Van Damm movie for me...when you're in the mood for it, there is NOTHING better.

I love Dafoe, but he's been in a lot of terrible shit. I honestly think about 75% of the movies he makes usually are pretty shitty.

I found the premise of the movie utterly stupid. Why bother setting the bomb to detonate when the bus goes below 50 miles an hour? He has a bombs on it already that he can remotely detonate, and I would think that would be sufficient to try to get ransom money. What good is asking for a ransom for a bus that could potentially blow up at any moment (and in reality what busy city could you keep a bus going 50 miles an hour during during rush hour) even if they were getting together the money?
Since he was also using that to mess with Keanu's character than there are better ways he could've done that as well. Off the top of my head, how about just put a bomb that goes off in Keanu's personal car that will go off under 50 instead of the bus? Now you got the remote bombs on the bus for the ransom and Keanu has his own problems to deal with.
The terrorist in Die Hard with a Vengeance fucked with Bruce Willis with bombs and kept his eyes on the prize too. Dennis Hoppers character's plan was just inane.

Did they ever prove that the bomb was staged to go off under 50? I know Hopper said that, but I think he was just bullshitting. I think he wanted to affirm that no rescue attempts would be possible, since rescuing people on a moving vehicle would be hard.

It's been a while since I saw it, but I do remember that the bomb did have a digital counter that measured the speed of the bus, and also that the guy was remotely watching and could trigger the explosives anytime he felt like it...he did stipulate nobody was to be rescued (when they tried, he detonated a smaller bomb as a warning or something)

He let them get the driver off the bus because he got shot. When some other lady tried to get off he detonated the smaller bomb.
