New Plush Movie Theater Chain Opens
Village Roadshow Ltd. just opened up Gold Class Cinemas, a chain of high end movie theaters that seat only around 25 people and have huge comfy recliner chairs, full food menus, and drinks (What, no dancing girls?). The market has apparently turned to total escapism, according to these guys, boosting movie sales (just like the other depression). The theaters boast no screaming kids, crying babies, or audience members carrying on an ongoing dialogue with the characters onscreen. They claim the chain is a huge hit (Of course they do).
At least four locations have opened in Pasadena CA, Redmond WA, Bolingbrook IL, and South Barrington IL. Admission is $22 weekdays, $29 weekends plus food, gourmet sandwiches, pasta, $10 - $15. They expect the chain will not compete with existing theaters since it's a different demographic (screaming children versus serious quiet adults on a date).
The Pasadena Weekly, in their "Film Feast" article, reports that patrons ride down two escalators to the swank underground lounges in the theater’s core (which formerly housed Laemmle’s One Colorado theaters) and wait until being admitted to their seats 15 minutes before show time. It’s like waiting for a flight in a frequent flier VIP lounge. |

Does sound like a good date idea, dinner and a movie at the same time. I wonder if they show all movies or just certain types? Like would they show Jackass 3 or only Richard Gere and Sandra Bullock romantic comedies?

Who the fuck would actually pay that much for just a movie ticket? I don't give a shit how nice it is, it will never be as nice as my living room, my food, or my drinks.

Yeah, I don't see this kind of idea working for very long. It's much too niche. The 25 seat limit though does sound really nice as the most annoying thing about going to the movies is that there are 200 other people in the room. It ruins any sort of immersion for me.
Also, I've never had a problem with kids or screaming babies when I go to the movies and if you're seeing a movie that's full of kids anyway, you've got the problem, not them.
But like Josh said, nothing beats being alone in your living room.

They have some theaters like that in Oregon and Washington. If you go on a Friday or Saturday night they even have live music playing in the 21 and over theater before the show starts. I loved going there for the atmosphere and being able to kick up your feet on the ottoman was a great way to relax. They even had a pillow pit at the base of the screen if you wanted to lay down while watching.
