I used my laptop last night and then shut it off as normal. Today it won't turn on. When I press the button, absolutely nothing happens. Also, the little light saying it's plugged in is on, but I believe another light signifying that the laptop has power is supposed to be on as well, even when it's off (I may be mistaken about this part).

So what the fuck? Did the battery burn out? Is the motherboard fried somehow?

The stuff with the lights might me normal, at least for me it's the same light (blue if plugged it, pink if the battery is charging).
The other light for me lights up if power is on and blinks if the computer is on standby. It doesn't do anything if the power is off.

You say nothing happens when you press the button? Did some searching, and some people had a problem with their power button,
though it was more about it getting stuck then it not working at all.

Did you set the battery to shut off the computer when it gets critically low? If yes, it's probably not the power supply because it would at least try to run on the battery.
But if you have access to another one, try it anyway.

Searching with google didn't give me much more info, as in most of the cases I read the computer at least started (the fan worked for one).

So, maybe try to see if it's the power button or the battery, and wait until GP replies.

You didn't drop it, did you? Some laptops are fragile as hell and can break from a 1-foot drop.

Krislexia had a similar problem with her laptop shortly after she got it. I believe she brought it in for warranty-authorized repairs.

I'm watching this.

This is the EXACT same thing that happened to me almost 3 months ago, but I have a Gateway laptop and it "sparked" and smoke came out the fan area. Checking the back of the laptop, it looks like nothing really happened, except that smell of burnt plastic.

All better now. I took the battery out for a minute, unplugged it, put the battery back in, and turned it on. It worked. I had already done that at least twice so not sure why it worked this time, but whatever. And no, I didn't drop my laptop, it wasn't a low battery because it's always plugged in, and it didn't overheat because it's only on when I use it and I'm very mindful of adjusting my legs to make sure the fan can breath. No idea what happened, but glad it fixed itself.

You probably had too much static electricity accumulated on your circuits. If it happens again, unplug your computer, take the batter out, and then hold down the power button for 15 seconds to let all of the static get shoved out. Also, make sure you turn it on and let things get fully booted on just battery power before you plug it back in, or you can risk another surge of static.

Jeebus, it is a new laptop right?

Call the company you bought it from and report the issue. Tell them that you were able to fix it but that you had a power problem. At the very least, document it somewhere so that you can recall the event when it happens again.

I have seen this happening more and more. Laptops with shitty components are sold and people end up with large paperweights and no way to get it fixed. Every company is guilty, and during the recession you can expect to see cheaper capacitors and other components used.

You didn't think computers got that much cheaper to manufacture did you? Yet we see laptops for $500 that have every bell and whistle you could want. There is a price for these changes.

I am not suggesting that people stop buying laptops, but rather to adopt the same emotion about them as they have about their cell phone. Laptops are disposable. Most new ones are designed for 2-3 years of use, but just like cell phones sometimes they get less.

Just don't let yourself get into the position where you have no recourse.

That emotion would be all well and good, but my first cell phone lasted me about 7 years so that's not something I can tolerate.

^ I would call a representative or something because that isn't normal and I don't think you'd want it to explode in your face.
