I didn't see this posted anywhere else on this forum, but it looks as though J.J. Abrams is going to be helming the next installment of the Star Trek franchise. Zach Quinto (Sylar from Heroes) is in negotiations to play Mr. Spock. The blurb can be found below (last story on the page).

Pretty exciting stuff.

Has been news for a while, and casting rumors are constantly changing:

Sounds promising, but I've been disappointed by Trek lately, so this is the franchise's last shot.

Also, I really want Sinise as McCoy and James Marsters as Spock.

I think Quinto has the look and we KNOW he can act. I agree on Sinese, though.

I know Matt Damon shot down the rumor that he had been approached to play Kirk. He said after hearing the rumor he talked to JJ, and JJ said that he would be good choice, except he's too old, because they are looking for a younger Kirk.

The word is that JJ is trying to talk Tom Cruise into making a cameo as Captain Christopher Pike, who was the first captain of the Enterprise, before Kirk took the helm.

Personally, I think if anyone should be cast as Pike, it should be Ray Liota, as he and Jeffrey Hunter (Who originally played Pike in the unaired pilot) look alot alike.

I agree, Liota would be perfect. Besides, I dislike Cruise.

Yeah, that Goodfella FBI agent from Smokin' Aces should be Pike.

Eric Bana, who you will remember as Bruce Banner in Ang Lee's failed Hulk, has signed to play a villain called Nero in the upcoming Star Trek, to be directed by J.J. Abrams. This is the newest casting announcement from the eagerly anticipated film, which will begin shooting next month, and will be released on Christmas Day, 2008.

Also in Star Trek casting news is the search for Captain Kirk, which has apparently been narrowed to include Chris Pine, (Smokin' Aces) who might be in negotiations to step into the well-worn shoes of one Mr. William Shatner.

The name Nero obviously screams Romulan.

They were also considering Russell Crowe and Karl Urban for the role. While I like Crowe, I don't think he'd fit in a Trek movie. I like Urban, so hopefully they'll find another role for him.

Unless he played an alien who liked to get drunk and pick fights.

I never got into Star Trek, but I get automatic updates on my screen from the BBC and this bit of news came up:
Quote:
Hot Fuzz star Simon Pegg is poised to play Scotty in the new Star Trek movie.

The British comic has been offered the role of the chief engineer, played by James Doohan in the classic TV series, his manager has told BBC News.

The film, directed by Lost creator JJ Abrams, focuses on the early lives of Captain James T Kirk and Mr Spock.

Star Trek's 11th big screen outing also stars Eric Bana, Zachary Quinto and Leonard Nimoy, and filming is due to start next month.

So I figured I would let you guys know: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/7041249.stm

He seems to fit the Scotty part.

Oh man, I just realized, Russell Crowe would be perfect for Scotty. Think about it, a drunkard who loves to fight. He just needs to cut his hair and alter his accent a bit. Crowe in a fist fight with a bunch of rowdy Klingons in the station orbiting Sherman's Planet would be great to see.

John Cho (Harold from Harold and Kumar) has been cast as Sulu.

Little-known actor Chris Pine has been chosen to play the young Captain Kirk in the new Star Trek movie.

Pine had to turn down a role opposite George Clooney in the film White Jazz in order to play Kirk because of a clash of filming schedules.

Though Nimoy will apparently play an elderly version of Spock, Shatner has said that Abrams does not want to use him in any capacity and he's sad.

Abrams is trying to find a role for old Kirk, but it's not fitting into the story, so he's having a hard time. So, it doesn't look like the Shat will take part.

Nimoy is more important and more respectable in my opinion. He refused to act in Generations cuz it sucked, but has accepted a part in this one, so it must be a good script.

Shatner on ShatnerVision has said more than once he won't be in the new "Star Trek".

I'm kind of miffed that the papers are saying it's an "unknown" cast, because I know about three quarters of the primary ensemble. Some of the choices I like, others I'm hesitant on, but I trust J.J. to deliver a kick ass film.

Winona Ryder has been cast as Spock's mother. Probably in a flashback since she and Quinto are roughly the same age.

There are some paparazzi pics floating around of Zach Quinto as Spock. Pretty impressive.
