So the only definite thing I want for Christmas this year is a 360 so I can get Banjo-Kazooie and Tooie. Problem is, I don't know the whole story with red ringing, nor on how frequent of a basis it occurs, so I'm wondering if I should get a 360, or just keep crossing my fingers that Nintendo finally decides to put those games on the VC.

So what's the story with red ringing? Have they fixed it yet?

The story with Red ringing predates to ancient times when Native americans would use rings of red fire to help heal wounds but also inflict major pain.

The red ring was also used in a small shanty town in old Texas that was known to be the symbol of a bad luck, there was once a bandit named Bandit red ring, who was the most dastardly cowboy in the wild west.

Pirates used the red ring as a symbol of bad luck too, but later adapted to the black spot of death.

Then in 1999 the red ring returned later afer a small cult named the red ringers ( who had red ring tattoo) would start havoc in a little town named Batman in asia.

Now the curse of the red ring haunts X-box 360's because you are not taking good care of your system the end.
You can fix it by putting a damp towel on top of a 360 but it doesnt usually work.

Amidst that story was a small bit of truth, JRA. Red Rings happen to folks who generally mishandle their 360's, whether it's not putting in in a well ventilated area, or leaving the system on and letting it overheat, or moving it around a lot (or, worse yet, letting it fall over). Depending what causes the red rings, you may be able to fix it yourself, usually by just leaving the system off for a day or so. The red rings themselves aren't the cause of the problem, nor are they a problem themselves, they're like the Check Engine light in your car, and as such, they aren't something that Microsoft can "fix".

I've had a 360 for nearly two years now without getting the RROD (knock on wood), but two of the guys I know with 360's have had it happen to them. One was still under warranty, the other had just gone past his warranty, but basically cried like a bitch on the phone about his warranty just expiring and got them to treat him like he was under warranty anyway. So, they both got free replacements, took maybe 1-2 weeks for shipping.

From what I've seen and heard from people, it seems like the RROD is inevitable on almost every 360. It's enough to where I won't be putting money down on a 360, and will be getting a PS3 instead this year. I just don't want the hassle even if it is under warranty.

if anything, making the seven hudredth topic about the RROD that will inevitably cause the usual fanboyism console arguments to flare up should be considered trolling. how about using the search feature to read any of the other topics that were made, or going to an actual gaming site if you really want to know?

Would everyone with three capital letters for a user name kindly cease and desist with the insults and baiting please. Thank you.

Back to the topic, I'm not sure if this covers anything you don't know yet, but Wiki has a rather nice overview of what the RRoD means and how Microsoft's been handling it.

Make no mistake, an XBOX 360 is not just a console, it is a computer.

Computers fail all the time. The most common parts that have issues are hard disks and capacitors. As with any computer hardware, expect those parts to burn out over time. This is one of the reasons why I think that gaming in the cloud will eventually become a preferred console type... give it another 3-5 years if net neutrality doesn't blow up and kill the internets.

Almost all early 360s failed at some point. My roommate's was kept in a well ventilated area and it died about 2 years in (launch console).

Now due to better manufacturing processes and heat management, few new 360s overheat. If you buy a new Elite you're almost certainly in the clear for a few years. And yes, all current consoles will die at some point. The reason the NES still works is because it's so simple!

Well from what I've heard you are less likely to run into red rings with the jasper editions.

First I wasn't trolling or baiting. Family members have asked me for weeks what I wanted for christmas and the only concrete answer I could think of just recently was an Xbox 360.

Second of all, just because a thousand topics have been made doesn't mean progress hasn't been made by Microsoft to fix Red Ringing. I suppose starting a new thread asking for a progress report was a better idea than necromancing a thread going "lol hay gais have they fixed RROD yet?"

Yeah, the xbox 360 survival rate is better with the updated systems. But seriously, if the only reason you are getting it is for those two games, far cheaper methods exist.

Aaaand I think we've gotten just about everything useful we're going to get out of this thread, and then some. So in the interest of preventing further name calling and accusations...
