The next group of shows...
Transformers - A series starring giant robots from outer space that can turn into vehicles. Many toys were sold. There's also some movies or something, but don't hold that against the show.
Speed Racer - A classic anime series starring the appropriately named Speed and his family as they participate in the world's most dangerous races in the world's coolest car.
Animaniacs - Yakko, Wakko, and Dot Warner were locked away in a water tower for being too crazy for cartoons. But sometimes they get out and have madcap zany adventures. There's also a large ensemble cast of characters with their own individual segments, one of which was spun off into another show.
Freakazoid! - Superhero parody with the weirdness cranked up to 11, starring a geek who was transformed into the completely nutso Freakazoid by a computer glitch. Also fights a bizarre gallery of villains, including one who shall not be named.
Remember the top 2 shows advance, so go to it.

As much as Anamaniacs was amazing, Freakazoid is just... better.

It was Transformers for me.
As a little kid I remember getting so excited to watch when it came on. Don't get me wrong, Animaniacs is a great cartoon too, but the Transformers was just amazing.

Transformers and Speed Racer are largely unexplored to me, not to mention before my time, so I'm gonna have to go with Animaniacs.

I went with Animaniacs, I loved that show growing up and was never to into Transformers even though I enjoyed it. Now, if it was Transformers: Beast Wars, I would have been all over that shit.

I still get excited when I watch it. The movie is also one of my favorite movies and I watch it quite often. And by movie, I mean 1986, not that Michael Bay crap.

As a child of the 80s, I was one of the rare ones who never got into transformers at all. I completely missed that whole boat. However, watching Animaniacs directly after high school let out every day is a very pleasant memory in my mind, so Animaniacs wins this round for me.

Ooo, Transformers had a nice little overnight run.
I went with the Warners. I'll be honest, I never really liked Freakazoid that much. My general opinion on it can be found elsewhere on these boards. Can ya guess where?

wow. g1 transformers = great
animaniacs = amazing and spun off pinky & brain
freakazoid = also great. the lobe is a great villain
tough choice for me, but i went w/animaniacs simply because of all the old school pop references as well as the literary references.

No one should vote for Transformers. We're trying to find the best cartoon, not the cartoon that influenced you most as a child or that you have the fondest memories of. The cartoon we choose should be timeless. Before you click Transformers, go watch a few episodes. Seriously. Did you watch yet? Yeah, they're fucking terrible, aren't they? Boy were we stupid as kids for liking that.

I still like it. I understand your point, but at the same time, it's not any worse than GI Joe, Thundercats, Voltron, The Real Ghostbusters, etc. I think it's just as watchable as lots of shows on this list.

Like Jeebus said, Transformers may have nostalgic sway over us, but it's not the best cartoon ever (imho). A buddy of mine lent me all the seasons on dvd and I couldn't even make it through all of it. I'm waiting for the Simpsons to show up in one of these thread so I can vote for them.

Meh, you can use any voting criteria you want. It's "Best" because "Most popular according to the nominations and voting of a sample size of 30 people who visit an 90s pop culture website" didn't fit in the title.
The Simpsons is in the next grouping, actually, going against Beetlejuice, Sailor Moon, and Thundercats. The groupings are here.
We'll see how this one stands in the afternoon. I think it's too close to call still (though Animaniacs is the clear winner).

Jeebus, I couldn't disagree more. The best cartoon is the one you recall most favorably. Cartoons are geared towards certain generations of certain ages of people. In the 80's Transformers was geared towards little kids who were alive in the 80's. It did its job beautifully. It doesn't mean it had the best drawing, plot, cast, or even air time, but how can you judge one generation against another unless you do so based on the memories that people have and the feels that go with them?
I don't plan on voting for Transformers all the way through the competition, but against Freakazoid! I have no problem. I was most likely not the target audience for Freakazoid! yet I was for Transformers. It makes sense that I would feel the way I do.
In most cases, I would say that older cartoons didn't have as much depth in many ways, but I think that ruling them out just because they weren't made in the 90's or 2000's is a terrible idea.
