Quote:
Paul Haggis Ditches Scientology

After 35 years as a member of the Church of Scientology, Paul Haggis is calling it quits. In a badass letter to Scientology’s national spokesman Tommy Davis (who hates Martin Bashir), the filmmaker lays out the reasons why:

Paul Haggis wrote:
It all started when a San Diego church publicly supported Prop 8. Haggis asked Davis to denounce its actions but Davis never went through with it. Then the already-pissed Haggis read an interview in which Davis denied Scientology's practice of "disconnection" (forcing members to cut off communication with loved ones who oppose Scientology). But Haggis knew disconnection first-hand. His wife was forced to cut ties with her parents. The last straw came when Haggis read about the smear tactics Scientology used against its former members. That's when he knew it was time to go.

And so, after writing this letter, I am fully aware that some of my friends may choose to no longer associate with me, or in some cases work with me. I will always take their calls, as I always took yours. However, I have finally come to the conclusion that I can no longer be a part of this group. Frankly, I had to look no further than your refusal to denounce the church’s anti-gay stance, and the indefensible actions, and inactions, of those who condone this behavior within the organization. I am only ashamed that I waited this many months to act. I hereby resign my membership in the Church of Scientology.

Sincerely, Paul Haggis

Why did he write the first paragraph in the 3rd person?

Interesting. I've attended some Scientology lectures and have had the e-meter thing a few times for fun (religion was my academic area of study under sociology) and personal experience (this wasn't limited to Scientology, I've been to quite a few different worship services for different denominations and Christian groups). I know that Scientology largely gets a bad rap, but I find them no less sane than any other religious person. Sorry. Laughing Wink At some point, logic must take a back seat to faith.

Religion shouldn't replace logic, and yet it does.

I re-read my last statement and it might need some explanation... I don't know that it comes across as I meant it. People can make fun of different religions all they want, but if you yourself are religious, you must realize that at some point, your own logic must take a back seat to your faith. At some level, you're believing in things that have no evidence to support them and require a leap of faith into the supernatural.

And I'm sorry if you took that as an attack. I don't believe in religion, but you're right about the logic part. It's just the premise of religion I guess.

I know it's kind of "religious" but since everyone hates Scientology anyways (unless you're an enlightened celeb), I sat down and did one of their tests about 4 years ago, and it was absolutely hilarious. It generalized a lot of basic human compositions and tied them directly to Scientology. The whole thing makes me question why anyone would follow such a bizarre teaching. But yes, they are basically told that anyone who doesn't believe what they believe is an enemy...yadda yadda...don't trust anyone, which basically is counter-productive in growing. But I'm glad another one came to their senses.

Right...I think I'll go with C.S. Lewis on this one. Thanks anyways though. Scientology is "Risky Business".

Nice quote. Laughing

Look at it (the actual beliefs) objectively for a second.

Virgin birth, resurrection of the dead, taking a fish and making more (already cooked and adult) fish out of a finite number of fish.

Aliens blowing up volcanoes with bombs, souls of aliens attached to humans, the ability to move and control the physical world with your mind.

I don't think that if you belong in either of those groups you are in any position to judge the other group. But you can believe what you want.

Well, the difference is, one group is a super secret cult and the other was never meant to be the super secret cult it has become (The Catholic Church). Christianity is my belief not my religion, I think all religions are flawed, but cmon, there are ones that are dangerous as well. You cant compare the two. Also, Dave Mustain converted me.

"Religion is for people who are afraid to go to hell, whereas spirituality is for people like me who have been there." -Dave Mustain

Dude...if you're trying to compare those two, it's no contest...Christianity wins by those standards.

This is going strictly by the idea of actual logic, not by a God, but logic. For all we know, Jesus Christ could've been a con artist with the fish trick, Irish girls "claimed" virgin births all the time during the 18th and 19th Century. Resurrection, is purely based off of a dozen or so people who claimed to see him.

L. Ron Hubbard on the other hand, how did he get this knowledge? It was just "passed" onto him? Did he have the same visions that Joseph Smith had when he started the Mormon church?

Let's just say for a second that both of these guys were indeed con artists...who do you think is more probable of getting people to believe?

I really don't care what someone believes as long as they aren't assholes about it. And isn't this thread sort of against rule 6?

All right, we have two and a half threads that have completely dissolved into criticism of religion. One of the forum rules here is that the forums are not a pulpit. I endear freedom of speech, but let's limit the discussion to one thread.

As far as I know no one in these forums is a Scientologist or has anything new to add to the subject.

If another "France Bans Scientology" type news story does occur, it will be merged into this thread and unlocked. Until then, this thread is closed.
