We all know the shit about "oh we couldn't show this chicks ass in FFVI" but is there a website that details what was censored in the American version of video games? For instance, I was playing Resident Evil 4, even though the game is rated M, I can't help but feel that there are things in the japanese version that didn't pass over here in America and still got shit canned. Anybody know of such a thing?

For RE4? No.

I do know that the UK version of MK vs. DC got uncut fatalities. Wankers.

nah, I am pretty sure we got the uncut version of RE4. This thought is of course based around what happened with No More Heroes, which was uncensored here, but heavily censored in Japan.

The German version of RE 4 was so heaivly censored it's apparently unplayable.

As for a website to try, I suggest tvtropes.org. It is strongly recommended you have a few hours to kill before going there however.

Seconded. I've lost many days of my life to Tvtropes.

Not only is that not right, that's not even wrong. It's a meaningless statement. Saying something is "one molecule away" from plastic is like saying a farm is one letter away from a fart. Water is "one molecule away" from being explosive hydrogen gas.

The american and Japanese versions of RE4 are basically the same. The German version has no headshots, no blood, and an easy mode for some reason.

Other than giving it to a little one (like say 11),what's the freakin' point of playing it then?

Heh, actually pretty ironic situation you guys have brought up. If anything, we got the uncut version, and the Japanese players got the cut version.

I'll just leave it at this: The Japanese seem to have a bit of an issue with decapitation.

Not that it's video game-related so much, but MtG cards printed in Chinese have to have their art changed so as not to depict human skeletons.

I do know that Japan does censor certain games that reference nuclear explosions. For example, in the Japanese version of Fallout 3 you aren't able to nuke Megaton.

I really don't think censorship is an issue anymore in the United States. Nintendo's old censorship policy is gone now, and they were the biggest influence to the changes most of us saw in years past in North America. Europe has more issues with that because of Germany's strict guidelines. The shit that is released here is the same or more graphic now. There are games they don't release here, but that is because they don't see it as being successful in our market.

In very specific, the Famicom was just about as censored as the NES. The only difference was that, they are Japanese and we are US citizens. Every other system did not matter asides Nintendo's direct rival the SEGA, and Atari.

In Japan the MSX, FM towns, PC9800, PC6800, PCX, and PCE, along with other systems was very linient towards what could and could not be allowed on there systems. Only to combat Nintendo. Also since PC is anybodies game in Japan. The PC market stayed strong along side the console market. Thus allowing things to be even more uncensored.

Later the PSX ( which is basically a SNES ) rode on in to first, becoming a semi replacement for those systems. However the Saturn and both the PSX was heavly censored in Japan as well.

The only difference between the two is culture. They only look intresting, the fact we don't know them. The same vice versa.

I just follow the comic book rule when I buy videogames.

The Japanese version of No More Heroes is less bloody than the American version.

The American versions of Soul Calibur 2 let you play as Berserker (reskinned Rock), Assassin (reskinned Hwang), and Lizardman (reskinned Lizardman) in Extra mode. The Japanese versions do not.

they aren't really reskinned, they're just VERY similar.

for example, rock couldn't "double grab" like beserker can. Lizardman also got a new move set.

the american version also got sophitia and seung mina, who were COMPLETELY absent from the japanese version.

Nintendo pulls this kinda crap every year. We make a bunch of worthless kiddie games, and release one adult game.

Are you thinking of a different Soul Calibur, perhaps? Because the Japanese version of Soul Calibur 2, at least on the Gamecube, had both Sophitia and Seung Mina:

Sophitia is my favorite character. I would have been ripshit if I had preordered this and she had been an America-exclusive character. Of course, it also would have motivated me to buy the American version of the game before Best Buy was clearing out its Gamecube stock and had it on clearance for $9.99...

you're right. it was actually that they were absent from the arcade version and then added to the console versions.

I'm still right about beserker and shit though Wink

also, cassandra totally took sophitia's place in my heart. her throws alone make me love her.

I dunno, I kinda like Rock. He has that charging headbutt that computer always seems to fall for. RING OUT!

Not quite a censorship issue BUT:

In the Japanese versions SMB3 and SMW, getting while using any power-up turns you directly into Small Mario.

So I think I figured out that Japan seems to censor more violence than america but america censors more sexual and innapropriate stuff than japan. I'm sure that says something about both cultures, I just don't feel like figuring it out.

Actually, the US version of RE4 was censored. A teeny weenie bit.

...don't ask me why I knew that. I don't know myself.

Bullshit! At the end of RE4, Ashley asks Leon to come back and tap that ass and he's all "No thanks!" Who the fuck turns down college girl pussy? Oh that's right heroes in Nintendo games.
