So today I got my belated B-day gift from my wife. A 4 slot MVS Neo Geo Cab! Final Fight has been moved to the garage. Came with 6 games, two not shown are Aero Fighters 2 & 3. So I'm stoked, but not too familiar with the Neo Geo's game library. Can anyone recommend some great games they enjoyed playing on big red back in the day?

METAL SLUG! Either the original Metal Slug, Metal Slug X or Metal Slug 3. Metal Slug X is basically Metal Slug 2.1. It fixes some slowdown issues and there are a few minor aesthetic and difficulty changes.

I know! I was trying to figure out which is best? I think 3 but then I think maybe X is better. It's like the riddle of steel...

3 is my all-time favorite. The Final Mission in 3 is just so ridiculously epic.
Sengoku 3 stands out as a great pick too. And if you're into fighting games, there's all those iterations of KoF and Samurai Shodown to choose from, not to mention SVC Chaos and Garou: Mark Of Wolves.

X is good if you don't have the hour needed to beat 3. 5 is okay, but it could have been so much more. 4 is bland by comparison to all the others, but it's still playable.
If you ever find a copy of Twinkle Star Sprites, make sure I never find out or I might just have to hunt you down.

I'm going to get hanged for saying this, but I liked Fighters' History, and you MAY be able to play it on NG.

Magician Lord gets a bad rap, but it was fun enough if you ask me.
Most of the Neo Geo games I saw in the arcades, though, were crap. You got two of the three I remember being decently fun (Art of Fighting and Puzzle Bobble), the only one I can think of you may want to find otherwise is Garou: Mark of the Wolves.

I think both King of the Monsters and Last Blade were N*G titles.

There was a Vietnam game who's name escapes me. The intro had the guy saying "do I have to go back to that he'll again?" there was a beat em up where you fought mutants and collected orbs for special moves. It had decapitations. There's also world heroes.

World Heroes was what the game was! Fighters History was Data East.

A little more obscure, but Shock Troopers and Shock Troopers 2 are favorites of mine. They're top-down run and gun games. Gameplay is the same in both, but the first one has semi-realistic graphics whereas the second one is anime style.

Thanks all.
So my list of games to purchase is now:
Metal Slug 3
Crossed Swords (Already found one for $10 on ebay)
NAM 1975 (The Vietnam Game mentioned)
Samurai Showdown II
Shocktroopers
KOF 94
This could turn out to be a costly venture. I like the MVS for this reason though, I bought my first arcade game (Final Fight) but even a game as great as that grows old. I had considered maybe X-Men or TMNT but the same thing applies. With the MVS I can constantly change out the games inside and keep me from growing bored with them. I also found a cool place to order boxes and artwork to house my carts in nice and neat on my shelves.
*Not mine, but I have 6 boxes on the way so someday soon my shelf will look like this!

Question. Do these games come with the inserts for the marquee display?

Ugh, replace KoF '94 with '98, 2002 or 2003, those are universally considered the best of the Neo Geo era KoF games. '94 (and '95 for that matter) controls pretty rough and and is very noob-unfriendly.
Alpha Mission 2 (and Pulstar/Blazing Star if you can find them for non-rape prices) is a great shmup.
Last Resort is alright.
Garou, as mentioned, is a great pick. It's probably the most beautiful game for the system (next to The Last Blade 2, which is also excellent) and compares well to Street Fighter III which is considered Capcom's best.
Real Bout Fatal Fury 2 and Kizuna Encounter are also good fighters.
You can't go wrong with Baseball Stars 2 if you want a sports game. Or Super Baseball 2020 for that matter.

I know KOF 94 blows compared to the other updated versions, but that one is mostly out of nostalgia. I never played the newer ones, would you say 2003 is the best?

2003 is damn awesome, especially with the new (at the time) on-the-fly tag system, the fast and frenetic pace of the fighting, and most of the characters' movesets being easy to figure out. It's good fun.
If you're really looking for a classic style KoF, though, go with '98.

It's decent, the mechanics are a bit slow but the characters are huge! Not a bad game at all considering the time frame it was released.
