We hear this shit all the time .

"oh he's/she's not dead. They faked it cos they're catching a lot of heat."

So who actually decided to off themselves for good publicity only to come out of hiding some time later? I'm just wondering if the whole "faked death" thing has any actual clout to it.

Nobody I can think of ever really pulled it off.

Andy Kaufman pulled a reverse, though, and did a pretty convincing fake fake death.

Machiavelli is the only person whoever pulled it off, I think. Certainly the only person who pulled it off then bragged about it.

Not the same thing but I found this "List of premature obituaries" on wikipedia. There's some pretty weird and funny shit on there.

Personally I think Andy Kaufman did shortly before his real demise (as one last gag). I do not buy into 99.9% of fake death claims but there are some interesting things in that remaining .1%, either way we will never know.

Interesting that this thread popped up, as I just finished my latest Cracked article about people who faked their deaths for ridiculous reasons which should run within the next few weeks. So if you're a faking death fan, keep an eye out for it.

Yeah I'm pretty sure he was dead too, I was just saying if someone did "pull it off" we wouldn't really know about it sense they would not have been outed as faking. And Machiavelli likely didn't fake his death.

It's a lot harder to fake your death nowadays than you'd think. When a young supposedly healthy person dies unexpectedly, the government likes to take a look at the body. And they're pretty big on death certificates.

Not to mention you're committing a whole ton of fraud...or you're going to find things tough. It's not easy for dead people to get jobs and such.

It's probably easier to disappear under suspicious circumstances and be declared dead when you don't turn up for a few years.

This. Unless you had some kind of serious connections who could hook you up with fake birth certificates, SSN's and such, I don't know how you'd ever be able to live a "normal" life after faking your death. Unless you live off the grid, like John Conner in T3.

Funny story, an early printing of Nobel's obituary and crude nature of it led to him leaving millions to the Prizes named in his honor when he actually did die.
