Blockbuster was good back in the day, no doubt, but they are slowly figuring out that Netflix is such a better service.
With Blockbuster it was right down the road, but returning the movie/game was always the difficult part of the process. Its looks easy on paper yet I find myself always getting sidetracked.
I always liked Hollywood Video better but Blockbuster is an important part of Nostalgia for me.

Fuck Blockbuster.
I've been bitter toward them ever since an incident where they accused me of not returning a movie. I got the manager on the phone and swore to him up and down that I returned it. I even said to him that I knew the exact time I was there, and if he would show me the surveillance footage of the return slot, I'd point myself out on camera returning the movie. He declined that offer, and assured me that he had his entire staff "scour the entire store" and my movie was nowhere to be found. They insisted I give them a credit card number so they could charge me (I denied them).
Long story short, I went to the store to search for myself, and found it within 30 seconds. They apologized, but it goes to show that if they "lose" something (read: the clerk misplaced it and can't be bothered to look for it) they were going to try to take it out on the customer.
Sorry for the rant, but whenever I hear the name Blockbuster, I've gotta tell that story.

i hate how they force you to pay all late fees at once, whereas hollywood lets you pay them off little by little

I've had some good memories back then with my childhood, obviously because since I was a kid I had no money and had to mooch off my parents in order to have something to kill time. Nowadays thanks to the advent of the internet, people have found a more efficient, cheaper, and conveniant way to rent stuff in Netflix and that other company that does the same thing, but with games whose name escapes me at this moment.
So yeah, I like Netflix better, but it's still sad to see Blockbuster be in this position even though their prices have been outrageous lately.

Blockbuster in my area has changed their rental prices from $4.50 to $4.25 to $2.15 to $3.30. No fucking wonder why no one likes them. They can't fucking make up their mind about what they are charging.

Blockbuster has fucked up in my town recently. We returned a movie and they said we didn't and for weeks we couldn't rent until we paid for it. Just to double check we asked them to check the serial numbers to see if they'd just missed it, and they did.
Pre-ordered NHL10, paid 20$ when we ordered it, my mom went to pick it up today and they said we never paid anything. She had the RECEIPT with her and showed the girl, so we paid 40 or something today and the girl put it on our account that we still owe 20$.
Blockbuster is a bit expensive and they keep changing their late fee policy, it's getting retarted. They are also selling all of their old movies so unless it's an absolute classic, don't expect to find it there if it's older than 1990. They didn't even have Robocop.
I go to a smaller rental store now that is much cheaper. Games are like 5$ for a week instead of 10$ at Blockbuster.

Ehhh, Blockbuster was always good to me. I would always return shit late and then go back to rent something and swear up and down that I had returned it on time, or it was my brothers or some shit and they would let me rent a new movie. But I also hated trying to pick a movie, I would get lost in a movie store for an hour and not even realize it. Netflix queue works so much better for me in that regard.

I always preferred Hollywood video too, and the Blockbuster in my large-ish home town (upper middle class, full of consumers) closed down a good 6 years ago simply because of better options like Hollywood Video and the internet. With the advent of online movie/game rental companies and how much more infinitely convenient they are, I think video rental stores will very soon be a nostalgic thing of the past.

Had a similar experience. They annoy the shit out of me.
On a semi-unrelated note, I actually ditched five years with Netflix to give Blockbuster online a shot, when they first started. The thing--the only thing--that attracted me was the fact that you could exchange your mailed videos for in-store videos, and the next mailed one would automatically come to you. It was a great system, and they made a ton of extra money off me because I was in the store every couple days and always picked up candy or soda or bought a movie or something.
Eventually they started charging a ton of money to get the privilege of in-store exchanges. Right about the same time Netflix started allowing free unlimited movie streaming from their site. I switched back. Sucks when you have a good thing going and get greedy, doesn't it?
Sorry for the rant, but whenever I hear the name Blockbuster, I've gotta tell that story. |
I had almost the exact same experience a few months ago.

Speaking as devil's advocate here (sadly, yes, I do manage a Blockbuster) the company has been pulling shitty numbers as a whole, but in the city over here the district manager has us bending over backwards to get people back in wherever they can.
Dude, I've been ordered to overlook late fees and shit up to like $100 if the customer has good history otherwise with us...I've had the Netflix and Redbox defectors come back into my store after awhile saying that they've had horrible experiences with it (up to and including stolen credit card information, Redbox charging for movies despite being returned, Redbox being unable to take your movie back because the vending machine is full...)
I've seen my business effectively double with the double whammy of the company offering the per-night rentals, on top of people screwed over by Netflix or Redbox customer support. Hell, even as a Blockbuster employee I used Redbox as well until the first time I returned a movie, didn't get it registered as returned, found a $25 charge on my credit card for a movie I returned the next day, and spent a few HOURS on the phone trying to get in touch with someone at Redbox's customer service to have never actually talked to a fucking human being.
I can offer this, if anything else-- we're human. You can't argue with Netflix or Redbox. You can with us, and if your argument is reasonable, byebye late fee. I've had customers who got everything back on time except for once, who owed us $150 in late fees, and I removed them ALL under district manager permission, because it's not worth losing a customer over.
Oh well. I guess I'm just partially bitter over the brutal irony, the irony being a customer who hands me money after renting several movies from me, only to turn around and say "You guys must not be making any money. You closing down soon?"

Not only is that not right, that's not even wrong. It's a meaningless statement. Saying something is "one molecule away" from plastic is like saying a farm is one letter away from a fart. Water is "one molecule away" from being explosive hydrogen gas. |

^ Well, here's the issue I have with Blockbuster (and I'm speaking here of their mail rental service; I still occasionally patronize the brick-and-mortars near me.)
I was Netflix customer for...well, almost literarally ever since they came out. The only failing I found was that when I wanted a movie *that day*, I couldn't get it except by going to, guess where, Blockbuster. Which seemed like a waste while paying for Netflix too.
Then Blockbuster launched its mail business. I was skeptical at first, until I head that you could return your mail movies into the store for a store-movie with no charge. Better yet, your mailed movie instantly registered as returned, so you didn't have to wait for the mail to get it to their office. It was an awesome system, and I switched right away. I was in that store at least twice a week, and they always made extra money off me because I'd always end up buying candy or soda or buying a movie or game or something. It seemed perfect.
Then they decided to take away the in-store exchanges. Then they brought them back, but you had to pay a lot more if you wanted in-store exchange privileges vs. mail-only. This was about the same time Netflix launched its unlimited streaming movies on your computer service. I wouldn't have cared if I could have still exchanged in-store at Blockbuster for the same price, but it was a difference of almost 15 bucks a month. So I went back to Netflix. *shrug*. I'll be back to Blockbuster whenever they decide to realize they got a little too greedy with the good thing they had going.
EDIT: Out of curiosity, I checked out Blockbuster's site again (hadn't in quite a while.) It seems like their rates for in-store exchange privileges have gone down. Its still not as cheap as Netflix, which offers the streaming videos at no extra cost, but its enough to *almost* be tempting.

Wellllll...don't know much about that except the store exchange part of it. I work in a brick-and-mortar, but it seems like the overwhelming majority paid the little extra because I've only had to tell like one person in the last three months that he was out of free exchanges.
As far as I know, the only real limit to the better membership is that they don't send you your next online mailer until you bring the in-store item back.
EDIT: and yes, I've dealt with a whole hell of a lot of mad people constantly complaining about Blockbuster's constant price fluctuations. My guess is I get an abnormally high amount of grief about this because, to be fair, Blockbuster's customer service number also sucks, and they have to yell at SOMEBODY, and since I'm managing a store they can walk into, I catch all kind of shit that's waaaaaaaaaaay out of my control. Sorry, folks. I don't make the rules, I'm just doing it for an admittedly decent paycheck. At the very least, I try to be as fair as I can without jeopardizing my job, so minor complaints like a day or two late fee don't bother me, I'll wipe it off as soon as you bring it to my attention. As far as I know, ALL stores should be doing that, so if you have a LEGITIMATE beef, I'd bring it to the district manager's attention. Unless you flat out kept a bunch of expensive ass games and hung up on us when we call you, we're pretty reasonable, and speaking from personal experience, I'm less inclined to remove ANY late fee if you use anything with the word "fuck" in my direction.

^ Nah, I understand. That's why I'm always super nice and respectful to the employees (of any store or whatever) unless they're actively disrespectful to me. Which rarely happens, so I rarely have occasion to get angry at them, even if I'm pissed as heck.

I would use Blockbuster over RedBox, that service is just a problem waiting to happen. I would much rather pay Blockbuster a little more and deal with a real person.
Problem with Blockbuster is that is sometimes has hard to find older movies, for new releases its good
