For those of you who haven't kept up with the Activision vs Infinity Ward (Makers of the Call Of Duty series).
It started with the firing of Infinity Ward's two bosses.
They started a new studio called "Respawn".
EA said, "Here have a shitload of money to make games, and we'll publish them"
Then a few Infinity Ward employees quit, and were soon scooped up by Respawn.
And, as of today:
[From Kotaku]
The exodus from Modern Warfare developers Infinity Ward continues at a breakneck pace, with news today that a further eight employees have left the studio in the wake of the "Legal Warfare" showdown.
In addition to the five men who left on Friday, we've learned that three more - level designer Keith Bell, designer Charlie Wiederhold and level designer Preston Glenn - also packed up and left the Activision-owned Infinity Ward at the end of last week.
Adding to these are five more, all of whom left yesterday: lead character artist Joel Emslie, weapons artist Ryan Lastimosa, artist Brad Allen, lead programmer Robert Field and our first non-developmental one of the bunch, HR/recruitment specialist Kristin Cotterell.
That brings us to a staggering 26 employees in total to have left Infinity Ward since the drama began, a tally which constitutes the bulk of the studio's creative and programming "brains trust".
There's no official word yet on where these ex-employees have ended up, but...yeah. (Respawn)

It is clear that there is a lot more to this than we know about. Why would so many leave even with huge cash incentive.
Something tells me that there is a very big underlying issue. No doubt it will be understood in the future when someone leaks the details.

Maybe because they were working for Hitler?
I mean seriously. Activision CEO Bobby Kotick doesn't care about the products his company makes or the people who buy them, he only cares about profit. Unfortunately, he works in a industry where the customers are very passionate about the products. Not only is it bad enough that he acts this way, but he came out and publicly said it.
This guy is R. J. Fletcher (UHF) in the flesh.
Remember RJ's speech about how the community means as much to him as a festering bowl of dog snot?
Kotick, gave damn near the same speech.
Not to mention the famous "I want to take the fun out of making video games." speech.

So, if he's like RJ Fletcher then that means that he'll get fired, fined, and kicked in the crotch by an old lady any day now...

Did the creators take the rights with them or is MW3 going to get hosed completely?

Activision owns the trademark now. They're set to reveal "MW3" (that's not what it's called, but still) in the series on Friday. But with a good amount the original guys gone, prepare for shark-jumping!
Also, IW employees want to sue them for half a billion.

It would be nice to see the great satan of video gaming get slapped across the face, but lets face it, they are taking on an incredibly powerful entity here.
The real tragedy is that I remeber a time when the position of activision and EA was switched. Activison was the location of high quality gaming and EA just poured out lots of repetive garbage every year and was the scapegoat of the gaming would. How different things are now. Not to mention that "der Führer" (aka Herr Kotick) doesn't understand "fun," or the concept of "soul," but I bet he can smell a cash cow from a mile away.
"Activision retains the discretion to determine the amount and the schedule of bonus payments for MW2 and has acted consistent with its rights and the law at all times."
If they actually got a clause like that in the IW contracts, then there is a serious problem

Activision to Shut Down Infinity Ward, Says Analyst
Activision may be planning to shut down Infinity Ward after completion of the second Modern Warfare 2 map pack, reports CVG. "Continued defections from their Infinity Ward studio have created meaningful uncertainty around the future of their Call of Duty: Modern Warfare franchise," wrote Janco Partners analyst Mike Hickey in an investor note. "We expect Infinity Ward studio will be essentially closed after their next map pack release, with development work on Modern Warfare 3 spread between two studios not historically tied to the franchise." He may be referring to Treyarch and Sledgehammer, both of which have been tapped for future Call of Duty titles, but haven't worked on a Modern Warfare yet.
Keep in mind that, for the time being, this is only speculation from an analyst. If it proves true, Activision will be putting the final nail in the golden goose's coffin. Even as leadership has flooded from the studio, Activision has retained the Infinity Ward name; if they shut down the studio, even that will be gone. Don't worry too much about the staff, though; we're sure most of them can find jobs at some other studio. |

Well the new COD 7, is being handled by Treyarch, (Who made COD 3 and 5:World At War) so it shouldn't be to different from the series. Treyarch usually takes the already made engine from Infinty Ward, and reskins it. "World At War" was just a retextured Modern Warfare 1 set in WW2, so I expect COD 7 to be a reskinned MW2 set in Korea or Vietnam.
It's sad to say, since I hate Activision and what MW2 was, but I am very excited for COD7 if it is set in Nam, as I have a weird fasination with the Vietnam War (Or conflict, depending on who you ask, since Congress never declared war.) and Nam games. So far out of the very small handful available only to have been worth a damn. ("Battlefield: Vietnam" and "Vietcong")
Also, it appears that Activision has already replaced Infinity Ward. I just read today that they signed a 10 year deal with.... Bungie. Yep, the Halo guys.

Well that being the case it's safe to say that Call of Halo will ultimately be a failed venture...

I really have a hate for Activision. My hate for them is basically the same my hate was for EA back in 2004 when th4y got the NFL license.
To me this whole Infinity Ward(who I side with) VS Activision reminds me of a great line from the original Metal Gear Solid:
"You've served your purpose...you may die now."
Treyarch also really pisses me off. I absolutely hated CoD 3, World At War was just Modern Warfare with a WW2 skin and I really worry about them doing Modern Warfare 3.

Activision has been around for a long time... unethical business practices is what they are built upon and when something like this comes up... eh... Just adds more fuel to the fire and hopefully they'll make a good game soon. Which I doubt, we're going keep getting the same game just rehashed over and over and over....

The largest irony, is that Activision was the first 3rd party puiblisher, and it was made up of disgrunted programmers from Atari who felt they should be recognized for their work, and paid better. And, now Activision apparently doesn't want to pay it's programmers and software staff. This is why companies are good. Corporations are bad. Fuck publically traded company, and the ancient and obsolete stock market. Nobody who serious buys stock (investors) care about what a company does or makes, as long as it is profitable. A good company goes public, get taken over buy majority shareholders who fire the people that started the company, and replace them with glorified accounted with Harvard MBAs and not the first idea about what the company does.

Alright, this is pissing me off. They announced the new Call of Duty for November 9, the same date as MW2, and the same as my birthday. I seriously had people cancel plans for "various reasons" on that day of my 21st birthday. Granted, the bars were empty, and there were a lot of women there, so, you take the good...

It is sad. As someone who has a few investments here or there and some retirement accounts, it is important to me that my investments be smart and that the companies that I purchase do well.
One would think that all a company would have to do is make smart good decisions to continue to grow. Unfortunately, I think you are right Knyte. Most companies don't understand themselves when they get huge and as they go public they only begin to understand the amount of money they earn.
I look to Google as one of the few companies that seems to make decisions based on their own thoughts and plans rather than a board of directors. Still, I have to imagine that their public face puts them in awkward situations when they need to choose what is best for the bottom line and what is best for their staff and customers.

I think it sucks because obviously IW and the COD series aren't bad games, but I think I will live. I am so sick of everyone on my friends list playing nothing but MW2.

Is it me, or does something in the air about the MW2 multiplayer feel off? I mostly quit due to the horrible respawn system, but there's something about the atmosphere that just feels off compared to a lot of the maps and settings in MW1.
