Remember the NES? Remember how it worked? Let me refresh you memory:
Step 1: Put cartridge in system.
Step 2: Turn system on.
Step 3: Press Start.
That was it. And if the game you wanted to play was already in the system, then you could cut out Step 1. Within 30 seconds of deciding you wanted to play video games, you'd actually be playing video games. Not anymore!
Now it's:
Step 1: Turn system on.
Step 2: Put game in system. With some systems, Steps 1 and 2 may be reversable.
Step 3: Wait for the console's OS to boot up. See a logo reminding you what console you're playing.
Step 4: Navigate through said OS and select "Play Game In System" from the annoying menu system.
Step 5: Wait for the game to load. See a logo reminding you what console you're playing once again.
Step 6: Stare at the logo for the game's publisher for 5-10 seconds.
Step 7: Stare at the logo for the game's developer for 5-10 seconds. This step may repeat a second and third time.
Step 8: Watch a cutscene reminding you what game you've selected, because you've probably forgotten by now. You can almost always skip this.
Step 9: Game checks to see if there's any DLC to load.
Step 10: Game checks to see if it connect to an online server, even though you haven't asked it to and aren't necessarily playing online.
Step 11: Press Start.
Why can't I just play a fucking game anymore? Christ.

I kinda wish we could completely skip the publisher/dev logo at times, or even have it just like the second X-Men game on Genesis where it just throws you right into the game.

Right...plus with the wii, you may have to change your controller set-up a few different times during a session.

You may also need to check the batteries in your wireless controllers, and/or find them.

I hate the little logo that keeps showing up in the top-left when your battery is going dead, it costed me a match against TD Mr. Sandman in POWii once. I'd rather just have the batteries go dead on me, than for it to do that for several days until finally dying.

Worst of it is when you buy one of those rechargable battery packs that never works! My 3rd party 360 cable doesn't even work when the damnable thing's plugged into the system!

Guitar Hero 3 was the worst offender ever for displaying logos of companies involved with the game.
As for games that used to do it in the past, NHL games for the Genesis used to make you watch a logo screen.

I think all SNES and Genesis games flashed the company logo when they loaded up.

Yeah, it can sometimes take forever to get a game started these days. That's what we get from going from cartridges to discs.

Syd,
You should do an article on video game startup time. From power on to first in game action. See where systems and vendors have taken us over the years.

Yes, the 360 does have that feature. But as far as I can tell, you can't set it to run the game from the harddrive if you've installed it. It just runs the disc. To play the game from the harddrive, you still have to go through the 360's menu and select it.
I prefer to run it from the harddrive nowadays, since it runs much quieter and I would think it's less stressful to the system (ie less chance of RROD). I've also heard that it reduces load times, although I haven't noticed a difference while playing Oblivion.

Now, would be the perfect time for another NeoGeo to come along. A no nonsense, no apalogies, hardcore game system, that doesn't pretend to be a "Home Entertainment System", nor a "Digitial Multimedia Interface", or any other buzzword bull shit. It just claims to be a hard core game system for hardcore gamers.
Media of choice: SSD memory cartridges. I mean if I can go to WalMart and buy a Jumpdrive with 8GBs of flash RAM memory for $17, how cheap is it to make 8GB of ROM memory? $1? .50? Slap that shit into a cartridge, and bam!
1. Faster than a CD/DVD/Blu-Ray disc.
2. Virtually unlimited storage compacity.
3. Better Copy Protection for the developers. Everyone has a CD/DVD (And, now many are getting) BluRay burners. How many people have a ROM imprinter? Thought so.
The console needs to worry about only four things:
1. Awesome Graphics & Sound
2. Good, Stong Processor(s)
3. Well designed controllers.
4. Internet/Network for multiplayer gaming.
You want to rent movies, browse the internet, and shop from home? Go use a computer. You want to play games, use the system. Hell, that should be the motto.

It varies from game to game, games like The Last Remnant do run a lot smoother when the data's installed to the hard drive, but stuff like Halo 3 actually advises against installing the game to the hard drive.

I see. Thus far Oblivion is the only game I've tried it with. Oblivion was a launch title and has a shit-ton of load times, so I guess that could be part of the reason why there wasn't much improvement. Excellent game, though.

I'm with you Syd. I think the problem is, at some point, video game systems became multimedia platforms instead of just plain old video game systems. I don't know why it's so difficult to have a DVD player AND a PS3 instead of trying to cram it all into one system, then bundling Netflix subscriptions with Fallout 3. What the hell happened to those clear divisions of entertainment?

The only reason I ever use my XBox and Saturn is for the games. If I wanted to watch movies I could download them off Netflix or some torrent site, or even watch them on TV with a VCR or DVD player. I don't need a gaming console just to watch movies and TV, IT'S A FUCKING USELESS FEATURE.

I second this post. The NeoGeo has gained a large cult following and lasted well into the early 2000s because of that. Well, that, and the fact that the games also worked in their own arcade cabinets.
Honestly, I think Nintendo should go back to cartridges for their next console. In fact, if you remember the PC-Engine/Turbografx-16, the Hu-Cards were considerably smaller than the SNES or Sega Genesis cartridges, yet their performance were comparable. What if Nintendo did something like that? Their cartridges would be barely any larger than an SD Card, yet it could have the capabilities of a PS3 disc.

True, the Wii couldn't play DVDs. Hell, it couldn't even play regular CDs.

The Wii is geared more toward casual gamers, obviously, so it's not my thing. And I'm still waiting for a game console that could surpass the power of a PC and not have annoying-ass gimmics like a DVD player.
