I am currently using Windows XP, but will soon be purchasing a desktop with Vista. What OSs have you used in your life and what are you using currently. I have used Windows 3.1-Vista and the Mac OS starting with the iMac G3.

My dad had Windows 95 for an incredibly long time (roughly 11 years), and it was just fine until around 2003.

I've had Windows XP on the computer I'm using now for as long as it's been at my house, and it's the best one I've used.

My dad has Vista on his computer now, and I don't see why everyone hates it so much, it seems fine to me.

I've only used Windows 98 once, when I went to my sister's house, and it was incredibly sluggish.

Each of my computers has a different OS.

Angie, the server-sorta thingie runs on Debian 4.0.
Alice, my gaming laptop, runs XP with Service Pack 3.
Victoria, my work laptop is a Macbook with OSX 10.5
Also, the soon-to-be-mine Alexandra will run AmigaOS 3.9 and after I get a PowerPC card, 4.0.

I've used: Windows 98, XP, 7 RC, Mac OS 8, 9 and X (and some of the older ones too, System 6 and 7 I think they were called), Ubuntu and Xubuntu. Sticking with 7 for the time being.

PC DOS
FreeBSD
Mac OS System Software 1
Mac OS System Software 2
Mac OS System Software 3
Mac OS System Software 4
Mac OS System Software 5
Mac OS System 7
Mac OS 8
Mac OS 9
Mac OS X 10.0
Mac OS X 10.1
Mac OS X 10.2
Mac OS X 10.3
Mac OS X 10.3 Server
Mac OS X 10.4

Did I mention that I hate computers?

I'm on Vista and find it good enough. Both XP and Vista can annoy the hell out of me sometimes, but for different reasons. XP isn't good enough for me to change OS,
but I'll probably get Windows 7 when I'll be sure it won't fuck up my files.

The only other one I used (that I remember) was Windows 98, and I never really had any problem with it.

Uh, '95, '98, ME (ugh), XP and Vista. I've USED some of the Mac ones, but I'm firmly a PC person, so Windows is what I'm really familiar with.

What GP, no Windows For Workgroups 3.11? Smile

My list looks much like yours, though also add Commodore BASIC, GEOS, Amiga Workbench 1.1, Amiga Workbench 1.3, and Amiga Workbench 2.0.

And, I don't get why everyone hated Windows ME. I got it preloaded on a machine, kept it, disabled System Restore, and it ran like a champ. In fact, for the year or so I used it, I cannot remember any notable BSODs I had. (I can remember plenty for 95,98,98SE,2000,XP, and Vista.)

I always considered 3.1 and 3.11 to be the same. I used both so if they count as separate I guess add another.

Windows ME was terrible. I used a fresh install of it on a machine that was previously running Windows 98SE. It was faster, no doubt about that. It just kept bombing at the most unusual times. It wasn't anything specific, but the stability of the OS went down hill. Also feature wise it wasn't really much more than Windows 98SE SP2.

Yes, I was at the computer shop early that day to pick it up, so my disappointment was higher than most. Yes, I bought it at a computer shop because electronics department stores didn't really carry much computer stuff at the time. Do computer shops even exist anymore? All of them in my area are gone.

DOS 4.0
Windows 95(my father consisently said, "In this family, we use DOS", hence we used MSDOS right up to 1995)
Windows 98
Windows ME
Windows XP
Windows Vista

XP is the most reliable and easiest to use OS that I've ever seen. Since Microsoft wants to take back some market share from Mac, I think those days are gone. Vista looks very nice, but it seems there is too much going on in the background and nothing is talking to eachother.

No, I don't think I will fuck Stummies.

I really warmed up to Vista after SP1 was released. It's a great OS and had some great features. I think Windows 7 (ie Vista 1.5) will be warmly recieved and will win Microsoft back alot of brownie points with the users.

XP was good, but from a Tech standpoint, I can tell you that I had to do more complete system wipes and re-installs for XP systems more than any other OS.

I completely agree. The OS was designed to require a reinstallation if anything went wrong. I have had much more success salvaging Vista machines than XP. For me, I primarily ran Vista on anything that had very modern hardware (last 2 years) and XP on anything older. Vista was simply too beefy for older machines. I would actually argue that any machine with less than 2GB of ram shouldn't move to Vista or Windows 7. Yes I realize that some vendors still sell 1GB machines with Vista, but that doesn't mean they work well.

^ I have JUST over 2GB of RAM. Might explain why it crashed all the time last week, and why I can't do shit (too much slowdown) if AVG starts a scan.

There is no reason not to be running at least 4GB of ram nowadays. If you use XP then 4GB is all you need. (And, all you can use if your not running XP Pro x64.)

If your system uses DDR2, then you can get a top brand, high performance 4GB (2x2GB) kit for $40-$50.

DDR3 4GB kits are only $60 - $80

If you have DDR1 or SDRAM, then it's a little harder to find and more expensive. But then again, if your system uses either of those, it is beyond time to upgrade.

I have 1GB of RAM on both of my laptops, 256 MB on my server and the Amiga'll be getting a sixty-four megabyte RAM chip.

I do not have any slowdowns or anything - XP, OSX 10.5, Debian and AmigaOS in that order. Now give me one good reason to get more RAM that doesn't include engorging my e-penis to gargantuan proportions.

(I like the letter "g." It is the noblest of letters.)

I have DDR2. But I don't want to open my laptop, because that's the perfect way for me to screw up everything.

I could ask someone for that, but meh. I'll just keep it at 2GB. It's not like I have much use for any more RAM. I barely play any PC game.

1. It will expand the life of your hard drive since you will record less data to the page file.
2. It will increase the speed and efficiency of applications
3. It will allow you to run more applications at the same time

There are three legitimate reasons why you should increase the amount of ram in your system.

Ubuntu on pepe.lepew, my laptop.

My work computer also runs Ubuntu.

Everyone has different needs based on what they do with their computers.

By now, I'm sure you know that I am quite a hardcore PC gamer, so my needs are higher than someone who just web-browses, uses Office, and listens to MP3s.

My main PC is running 8 GB. Now before you start accusing me of trying to "enlarge my e-penis", between 3D Modeling, 2 VM systems that are occassionally running in the background, and gaming, I feel this is the perfect amount for me. I have seen my RAM usage peak at around 6GB when I am multi-tasking.

My HTPC only runs 1GB, as I only use it for watching Videos on my HDTV and playing emulators.

My Server runs 4GB, as it works as a media/file server as well as an occasional dedicated LAN server for gaming.
