No matter what I do, I seem to end up with razor burn on my neck.

I used to use an electric razor, but then I began suspecting that was the problem. So I switched to Gillette Fusion a couple years ago. But it hasn't helped. I use a shaving gel with Vitamin E and Aloe in it, and that hasn't helped.

I suspect that part of them problem is that every morning when I shave, I reirritate the already irritated skin. I should probably take a few weeks off from shaving to let it heal, but I can't. My job requires me to be clean-shaven, and I hate having a beard anyway.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Pff, our job does not require us to be clean shaven; I have a goatee and shave whenever the hell I feel like it and there are a bunch of other guys who are just as scruffy in our departments.

Well, it's kind of Catch-22.

You are allowed to have a beard, a goatee, or a moustache. But you are not allowed to have a transitional beard, goatee, or moustache. So either need to already have one, or you need to grow one on a vacation. If you go into work with 2-3 day's worth of stubble, they can send you home if they want to. And I've seen it happen several times.

I never get razor burn(well almost never) and I never ever use shaving cream, I just splash some cold water on my face and blade. I don't shave every morning though, usually every 3-5 days depending what I have planned for the week. Unless it grows into a beard overnight, try shaving every other day, that might help.

I generally do shave every other day, unless absolutely necessary.

I used to get razorburn a lot. Then I started using Nivea's shaving gel for sensitive skin, and a post-shaving moisturizer (sort of like aftershave that doesn't feel like napalm), and those both seemed to fix it.

Yea, it's based out of Norway so I think you would have to import it. However, its about $30 before shipping, which is not hellacious, yet it is till a nice hunk of change.

Do you put anything on your face after shaving?

Are you taking your time when you shave? I've gotten razor burn mostly when I'm in a hurry and do a rush job. If you take small strokes, and clean the razor after every few strokes you should be fine.

The problem ceased to exist after I started using a straight razor, requires a little more work (sharpening, stropping etc.), especially with the sweet Lemmy Chopstache I've got going, but it's worth it to me. I've been told the same results can be achieved with safety razors, the logic being that a single blade is less aggressive and irritating to the skin than the action of having multiple blades going over your skin in a single pass, that, and you have more control over the blade angle and fewer passes to get the desired shave.

EDIT: Also, have you tried keeping a warm/hot wet washcloth over the affected area before shaving? Other than being continual irritation, there could likely be an ingrown hair issue as well, usually the effect of a too-close shave, the washcloth, in lieu of hot lather, helps to bring the hairs out.

I could see that....I wanna start using a straight razor.

I used to have the same problem. I know I don't speak for everyone but I find that it happens significantly less when I use Barbasol as opposed to the generic stuff. I also find that I get less irritation when I replace and clean my razor frequently. I can grow a decent goatee within a week so I have to shave often when going in for job interviews. I find it's best if I keep the skin constantly wet as well. If I hit an area that feels even a little dry I apply a little more water if I've already removed the shaving cream (I can never seem to hit it perfectly in my first pass).

I hope it works out for you regardless.

Hmmm, I used to get razor rash a lot from using the blades for too long. Change your blades. Otherwise try rinsing your razor off in cold water I think helps. I also use Clinique for men post shave heal lotion afterwards. I'm lazy at shaving though... I only do it about once or twice a week.

After I saw Sweeney Todd, I wanted a straight razor. Not so much as an actual razor though.

Trim it up after two days. As long as it is defined they won't give you a hard time. They just want to make sure you aren't letting it go.

My work doesn't give a fuck so I just shave once a week or so. I happen to be very lucky that I have an even beard and my hair grows in full.

When I used to shave every day I followed some advice offered by Playboy magazine about 15 years ago.

1. Shave with the grain, never against
2. Smooth strokes and rinse the blades after every few strokes.
3. Don't shave with cold water
4. Shave before you shower
