saw it tonight with my bud and thought it was a good comeback movie for Sandler. We got to see a real peak into the world of Sandler's fame. It was Sandler adapting to the new generation of Hollywood comedy as his struggle with excess and being left in the dust of fame but not true happiness. He played the godfather role very well.

Rogen's character seemed unsure of himself but was solid notwithstanding. The minor characters were very solid and the acting was believable. Had alot of good pop culture references and witty situations.

It was a comedy/drama hybrid, you will see what I mean if you see it.

This type of movie shows real human issues and conflict, but also that people use their senses of humour to get through conflict(great quote from IMDB)

Its a drawn out movie, but its for a good purpose because of the message, don't go to the 10 showing or you will be there till 12.

So, like Judd Apatow's other movies, this could easily be 30 minutes shorter?

Haha, I was about to say something along those lines, Jeebus.

And also like Apatow's other movies, I will certainly wait for the DVD release to watch it, if at all.

I know for a fact that's true, but what does this have to do with the movie?

I might, I like Seth Rogan and Adam Sandler, it looks decent enough and I have a gift card for the movies.

Saw this tonight. Definitely had some big laughs and some great cameos, but it was overly long. As one review of it I saw said: The "Funny" parts of the film are great, the "People" parts are not.

I have a few issues with your comments.
1. If you go to the 9:20 showing you'll be there until 12. Yes, it's that fucking long.
2. It's good for it to be that long cause of the message? Really? That message has been beaten into us since birth by everything from Barney to The Real World.
My review?

DO NOT PAY TO SEE THIS MOVIE.

Sure there are funny parts, but the movie is way to long, it barely has a plot, the moral is completely banal, what little plot there is is absurdly predictable, and while the funny stuff is funny, a lot of it takes WAY to long to set up. Spending 2 minutes talking about your grandfather is not appropriate just so someone can say he went to Hell. It's funny, but the setup is too long, and they keep repeating the punchlines to make sure you got it.

This was in the trailer (at least the theatrically one) anyway, but SPOILER ALERT:
Adam Sandler gets better. Like I said, this was in the trailer. I and most everyone there knew going in that he wasn't going to die. It shouldn't take 90 minutes into the movie for him to find out he's better.

Long story short? I had some laughs, but ultimately this left me bored and wanting it to end. I think it think it should have been called "Ego Project" since they were all playing themselves with different names and it even included old footage of Sandler and the female lead, who is apparently Judd Apatow's wife.

I must be the only person on the goddamn planet that thinks Judd Apatow is a hack and that his comedies are not all that hot.

Haddox didn't seem to hate it as everyone else. Then again I have not seen it, and probably won't hate it either, as I didn't hate any of his movies. I just have no desire to see any of them in theaters or own any of them. They are all rental movies, like The Matrix Trilogy or anything by the Farrelly brothers.

Sorry, the general consensus on the street is that Judd is the new comedy writer for the new millenium.

So basically I'm using this thread to voice the opinion that if knocked up sucked, 40 year old virgin was overrated and made if anything by Steve Carrell, and that Adam Sandler hasn't been funny since the golf movie, then this doesn't seem like its going to be worth rushing out to the theaters for.

I whole-heartedly agree with this! My friends love Apatow's movies yet I cringe when I hear them talk about how great they are and realize the fact that I associate myself with these people, but they're my friends and I can overlook their faults. But anyway, Apatow movies tend to be full of dick jokes and usually have Seth Rogen as one of the main characters. YAWN! Same old, same old.

I hate to rant and be off-subject, but it's nice to see I'm not the only one here who thinks Apatow is vastly over-rated. I won't be wasting my time with Funny People.

I thought the message in the end was realistic, alot of women play that BS like they are unhappy in their marriage and use some guy to try to get their current boyfriend/husband to act right. It was actually spot on and I admire Apatow for showing people what they needed to see in todays degrading moral society where its suppose to be OK to cheat on someone now. Was it needed in a movie marketed as a comedy? I am not sure. I thought it was very drawn out but the message would hit home to the right people who realized what he was doing.

and seriously Jeebus, GI Joe flatout sucked so there was nothing else worth seeing at the movies.

That wasn't the message of the movie, though. The message was essentially:
[movie announcer voice] "Adam Sandler is: The Great Gatsby" {/movie announcer voice]

I'm going to pretend I didn't read this. I refuse to see either of those. The only director worse than Tarantino is M. Night Shyamallan, however the fuck that's spelled, and District 9 is going to be a super-heavy handed film about the poor Mexicans.

although i dont agree w/what you said, i will defend to the death your right to say it.

but IB looks decent. maybe im just a brad pitt fan. in the manliest sense of the term of course. and it has eli roth. cant go wrong w/a hebrew guy.

and i have to agree, D9 will have some sort of underlying immigration/segregation message. but what movie nowadays doesnt have a message?

I once saw a video of Tarantino spitting at a critic on the red carpet at the premiere opening of some big film he was attending. Too bad he can't spit out some good movies nowadays! Though, he IS better than whoever directed Meet The Spartans, Disaster Movie, etc.

Also, District 9 looked like Transformers to me in the last preview I saw for it. I was intrigued when I saw the sneak preview, but now it looks like something I'll just wait for on DVD. I will give it a chance when it's at my local video store.
