Aww. Hemingway's probably my favorite author of all time, and A Farewell to Arms is probably my favorite book of ihs.

^ I totally respect that. I mean there must be a reason he's considered a giant of American literature, but for the love of all that's holy I can't figure it out. My personal idea of hell is being trapped for all eternity in a library stocked with nothing but Hemingway and those fucking "Chicken Soup" books.
Maybe you can enlighten me some, though. What is it about him, and that book in particular, that you find so attractive? You may inspire me to give it another shot.

Well shucks, I'd need to actually sit and think about that awhile...
Here's one for the topic, Sons and Lovers.

Oh boy...
2/3's of Dante's Divine Comedy (the non-inferno bit)
Faust (which is actually worth reading)
Everything Dan Brown wrote
Books 5-7 of Stephan King's Dark Tower series
A Midsummer-night's Dream (okay, it's a play. I still despise it)
Every Dune book not titled "Dune"
And being an English major does not mean you are supposed to kiss Hemingway's butt. The general consensus amongst my peers was that Hemingway was very dry, and wholly not entertaining. Important to literature? Yes. Still more boring than a kindergarten production of Hamlet.

I hated Jane Eyre. It was sooo long and soooo boring. I've seen wood shaveings more interesting than any character in that book, and the sad thing is I think that was the point.
I also never liked To Kill a Mockingbird. It seems to me that Harper Lee just wanted to cash in on the social unrest of the time.

Awww man and you were just getting to the good part! I know it starts slow, but once Iago gets scheming, it takes off and never looks back. (Full disclosure: I have a deep and abiding love for the Iago character, so I *am* biased. But its still in the top three of my favorite Shakespeare plays.)

I so feel your pain. I hated that damn book. And I could never get over what a bitch Hester's kid was.
Also, "A Farewell To Arms." I know I'm supposed to kiss Hemingway's butt because I'm an English major, but seriously, I hate that book, and 90% of the rest of what he's written. Just....UGH.
"Catcher in the Rye" is another one like that. Its supposed to be this amazing and deep insight into the life of a disaffected youth, but frankly, I wanted to just slap Holden upside the head and tell him to get his ass a job or something and quit whining. Brat. |
I almost put down Catcher. At the time I thought Holden was a whiney, whimpy little kid that needed to get his ass kicked so he could pick himself up and move on. I think I can relate to the person I was in highschool and Holden a little bit more now though. The problem was Salinger's language didn't really translate into the Gen-x culture for me. What a phoney.
A book that really sucked? Try Slaugther House Five. What a piece of crap. I thought I was reading a cool World War I saga like All Quiet on the Western Front, but immediately it would shift into some sci-fi garbage. Stupid, stupid, stupid.

Okay Opti, that's just not fair lol. Its not a matter of the book "not being for us." Its a matter of us soundly disliking the main character, which is a problem, in terms of ability to enjoy the book. Obviously we're in the minority since the book is an acknowledged classic, but there's no reason to knock other people's opinion (or act like they're making some gross generalization that they aren't) just because they feel differently about the book.
TL;DR: I knocked Holden because I firmly believe that he is a horses' ass. No one insulted Salinger, or implied that he was wrong to write the book. That's a perfectly valid viewpoint--as valid as thinking that the book is a great, deep and meaningful one.

I was mostly answering to this. I agree that Holden can be unlikable but I think that Thortons argument was deflated when he called Salinger a phoney for not personally reaching him and his culture.

The Great Gatsby. Gatsby is the biggest pussy I've ever had the displeasure of reading about, next to the guy from The Crucible.

THANK YOU, on both books. I hate Gatsby. And while I adore Arthur Miller and actually quite like The Crucible...John Proctor is an idiot and a fool. Dying when pretty much everyone knows you're innocent doesn't prove a point, asshole, it just eliminates the one person in the town who might have been able to affect change!
Idiot.

Yes, but HE has an excuse. The whole point is that the protagonist was doing the one thing he could do to take control of his life--which was nothing. John Proctor wanted to STOP all the killings in his village, but just ended up making the problem worse, really, by refusing to stand up for himself and call the bitches out.

Watch one of the two film adaptations of it. They're equally faithful to the book in terms of how stupid John Proctor is.

I guess that joke didn't fly too well. In the book Holden constantly refers to adults and people in charge as "phonies."
Certain books are written in language that doesn't translate well but still can be considered timeless. Others seem out of place, but still work for me for some reason(The Outsiders). I couldn't connect to this book and I still blame it on the author's use of language.
Salinger can do what ever the hell he wants(wanted)and considering how popular the book is, clearly I'm in the minority on this. This book sucks IMO and this is why. People may have other reasons.
