You guys can say whatever the hell you want, I just added a whole bunch of neat games to my ROM collection thanks to this list~

Like I said before, if he had chosen some of those more obscure games and made it a "best games you may not have heard of" list, it'd be a really damned good article. Instead, it came off as kind of pretentious because he was just name-dropping the most obscure games he could and rating them above many popular classics. He still writes well, and a lot of those lesser-known games look cool, but it was the tone of the article, and the listing that rubbed people the wrong way.

Greg said it extremely well there, definitely agreed with that. As for myself, nearly everything he listed was already in my collection, so it didn't do much for me.

I'm not going say the list isn't like that - a listing of obscure games.

Like i disagree with aspects of the list but that doesn't mean it's necessarily a bad list.

It's kind of annoying to see people say "oh they didn't list the classics".

If they listed the classics every list would be the same. This was the guys own list and whether they are popular classics or not is relevant.

I quote from the article:
Quote:
My aim here was to make a unique list that goes beyond simply my picks and my thoughts about them. This list was carefully crafted based on my experience of well over seven hundred individual titles for both the NES and Famicom.
.

If he doesn't like your precious classics or puts an unknown over a classic that is entirely up to him. It's his list. The list in that respect is not written to be "this is the ultimate list you are all fucking wrong plebians". It was written like he says from his experience and from his recommendations to gamers or a "unique list" like he also states.

You can disagree with it all you want. Personally my list would not have "all the classics" in the top 10. Legend of Zelda would certainly not be there.

So it is a unique list and just because it doesn't have the generic:

1. SMB
2. SMB3
3. Legend of Zelda
4. Megaman 2
5. Megaman 3
6. Metroid
etc.

doesn't mean it's shit.

Favorite and best are two separate things. And classics are classic for a reason. You can't say "best" when you mean "favorite".

Yeah, I read his rules, Alow, and I see your point. I understand putting obscure or Japan-only games or romhacks ahead of standard NA releases. They could very well be much better. Unfortunately, the vibe I get from the article is just a guy who's proud of all the obscure stuff he knows. I don't dislike him or his writing for it, I can just understand how much of an irritant it can be. I think that even beyond his rules, putting crap romhacks and pirated games ahead of well-designed games purely just to look smart is kind of obnoxious. One of my favorite list videos is the "Other Greatest Movie Quotes" from Harry Hanrahan on Youtube:

It acknowledges all of the "We're not in Kansas anymore quotes" and makes its own lists of memorable, funny, and/or corny quotes from movies that aren't always famous, but we drunkenly quote to each other at 2 in the morning (not to mention R-rated quotes that the AFI would never have the guts to include). It's just cool that they acknowledge what's popular and classic, while introducing some new knowledge.

So here's to you Mrs. Robinson. People love you more- oh, nevermind.
