Ha! My question is fairly simple.
What does Lord of the Rings and Lost have in common?

Doesn't Kingdom of Heaven mostly take place in Jerusalem? That's technically on the Asian continent...definitely not Europe.

I was going for the "L and O" answer, but that's correct too. Yay Klimbie!

Alright, since you didn't give out a question in over a week, I'm hijacking this one.
So, when we decided that DVD wasn't high definition enough for us, we turned to the newly-mastered blue laser technology, which has a shorter wavelenght and allows more microgrooves on a surface of a disk - this is where HD-DVD and Blu-Ray came from.
But, there were also attempts to upgrade, expand and otherwise spiffy-up the DVD format. One of those attempts produced an open specification that is compatible with all DVD players and allows for manufacture of DVD discs that are virtually unbreakable - and can be bent like a tube, too! What is the name of this awesome technology?

...No, I already said it's a completely new format that uses the blue laser technology. Read questions just a bit more carefully, eh?

The flexible DVDs do exist, and can be purchased online, such as:

As for the reader technology, are you referring to UDOs? (Ultra Density Optical)?

Shit, sorry for letting this thread die for a bit. Forgot I got the last question correct.
I'm fairly certain you mentioned this in the chat once, yet I still can't recall the name. Damn.

Knyte, I am indeed not. This is an open standard that's compatible with DVD and it allows production of thinner discs without the license of the DVD forum - and it has a very specific name.
Klimbatize, I did mention that... I have The Seven Samurai on it. Awesome film, awesome format
Altough I refer to this format as an extenstion of the DVD format, it doesn't mean the same technology wasn't applied to the CD format as well.
Keep hunting. Questions are posted to be answered, so I'm going to spout some hints.

Kenthegod, @om*d, I don't know where you get those WRONG names!
Knyte, are you referring to HD-DVD? I already said that wasn't it. Unless, y'know, you meant something else.

No, I am talking about "HVD" format. Not HD-DVD
HVD uses regular DVDs and plays on regular DVD players. (Some, anyways.) So, it fit your question pretty well.
| Quote: |
High-Definition Versatile Disc (HVD) is an Asian standard of advanced high-definition technology originally developed in China by AMLogic Inc., for high-definition video. The format resolutions support 720p, 1080i, or 1080p on version 1 discs. Version 2 of the format added high-resolution beyond the standard fare of HD for use on non-TV monitors that support higher resolutions, up to 1880p.
A modified MPEG-2 MP@HL video-codec is used and the format supports audio encoded in Dolby AC3, DTS, Dolby EX, DTS ES, and Prologic 2 audio formats.
All HVDs use standard DVD discs. While the format is referred to as HVD it has no relation to the Holographic Versatile Disc format that came along later and used the same acronym. There are only a few DVD players which support this format. PowerDVD, VLC media player, and Nero ShowTime are the only known software packages to handle the format as the MPEG files are non-standard. Though popular in China, the format, much like VCD, has had little acceptance outside of Asia. Discs are rarely found for sale outside of Asia. |
I'm really running out of ideas.
I know there are EcoDiscs, which are thinner DVDs, but they hold the same capacity of a DVD5.

This still isn't what I'm thinking about, but you're really, really warm.
EDIT: New hint time. This format is really popular in Eastern Europe and is a common material for bonus discs that come with various magazines. That makes you just a google away from the answer.

The first person to post after me gets to ask the next question.
