Penthouse magazine founder Bob Guccione dies at 79

What you choose to do to honor his memory is up to you.

The first time I heard about Bob Guccione was when they referenced him in relationship to his son in GNR's "Get in the Ring"

Quote:
Bob Guccione Jr. at Spin,
What you pissed off cuz your dad gets more
pussy than you?
Fuck you
Suck my fuckin' dick

You be rippin' off the fuckin' kids
While they be payin' their hard earned
money to read about the bands
They want to know about
Printin' lies startin' controversy
You wanta antagonize me
Antagonize me motherfucker
Get in the ring motherfucker
And I'll kick your bitchy little ass
Punk

Since the song came out before the internet, I asked some friends who the people in this song were. I mean... it was 1991/1992, so most of my friends were 11 or 12. None of them had any clue who Bob Guccione Jr. or his dad were. So I asked my dad. Funny enough, my dad had no idea who Bob Guccione Jr. was, but he did explain who the father, Bob Guccione was and what his job was. Not a particularly exciting story, but man was it awkward... more so when I was showing my dad the lyrics to GNR songs.

Will Ferrell played Bob Guiccione on a few occasions on SNL. In the most memorable sketch, they made fun of Caligula.

On that note, is it bad that I associate Bob Guccione more with Caligula than I do with Penthouse? Especially because lately, Caligula is now on Netflix streaming?

Not only is that not right, that's not even wrong. It's a meaningless statement. Saying something is "one molecule away" from plastic is like saying a farm is one letter away from a fart. Water is "one molecule away" from being explosive hydrogen gas.

It's bad to associate anything with Caligula. Ever.

My biggest problem with Caligula was the pacing and direction. It could have been a much better movie than it was. I feel sorry for McDowell for taking the role, poor guy always has been typecast as a villain.

Wasn't it a porn? Who cares about the pacing and direction!

It was not a porn, but Bob Guiccione did add in roughly 6 minutes of hardcore sex.

Ari Up, lead singer of the Slits and John Lydon/Johnny Rotten's stepdaughter died today. Weak! She was a pretty decent musician. What a shame.

Man, I was excited because you mentioned dead and Johnny Rotten in the same sentence. Maybe next year.

61 year old Pokemon anime writer, Takeshi Shudo.

Yesterday, Pokémon writer Takeshi Shudo was rushed to the hospital after suffering a hemorrhage and collapsing at Nara Station. He has since passed away. Shudo was 61 years-old.

Shudo created TV anime Fairy Princess Minky Momo and worked on various anime through the 80s and 90s. He became the chief writer for the original Pokémon television series and went on to write the first three Pocket Monsters feature films.

Kinda sad.

My favorite baseball coach of all time! May he rest in peace. His book "Bless You Boys" is a hell of a read.

Yoshinobu Nishizaki, co-creator of the classic Space Battleship Yamato, known in ths US as Star Blazers when it hit here in 1979, and later... Urotsukidoji, which needs no explaining. Not out of the norm when you consider he lived a pretty weird life up until now:

That's a damn shame. He held on for quite a while, though.

Very true, the dude worked for 69 years. That is an incredibly long career.

That guy produced a lot of damn fine movies. That's the kind of life to look back on and be happy. Also, his daughter is tremendously hot. Just sayin'.
