Graffiti is cool, but I don't think it should legalized. Graffiti to me is more than spray paint on a wall. If it was legalized it wouldn't be the same. If people wanted graffiti they could pay a graffiti artist to paint them some shit. I really hate it when places cover up good graffiti. I remember when I was a kid there was a building next to my Dad's record store that someone put a stencil of the Misfits skull on. After a while people just kept adding more and more to it until it was this super cool mural thing. Then one day it had all been whitewashed. That really sucked for me because it had been there since I remembered, it wasn't like it was some overnight thing.

To put my earlier post in perspective the cost of houses where I live went from $200,000 to $300,000 in two years time after they bulldozed the abandoned shopping center in my neighborhood that had been abandoned for years and was literally covered in graffiti and every wreck of a building in my neighborhood that was just the same. I can say from experience that the cost of graffiti to me is $100,000. The overall revitalization effort in the last ten years has raised my house from the $70,000 I paid for it to what it is now. The appearance of a neighborhood matters ALOT!!! Yes, some graffati artists are good at what they do, but that is a skill that could be better applied elsewhere.

I can't figure out if this entire account is schtick or if you're serious, especially taking into account the posts of your other account.

An excellent point. I guess even though some of it seems really, really cool to me, the overall consensus on the graffiti issue is that its bad, and indicates a "bad" area (whether that's true or not.) But you're right, just the fact that it does things like bring down property values is reason enough to keep stuff clean.
Although, just as a counterpoint, I think an abandoned shopping center would bring down the value of adjacent properties whether it had graffiti on it or not.

What would you suggest then? Legalizing it would just make for more problems in my opinion. I'm sure people who do graffiti do not want to have to be forced to use a specific legal location. Making it legal would do nothing. People will do graffiti no matter what. Having a legal place to do it won't make graffiti go away in other areas.

So what you're saying is that you want destruction or property to be legal. You want to be able to spray paint on buildings without asking the owner if it's okay so you can remove $100,000 of equity out of jackfrost's house. In what rational world could something like that EVER happen? And this isn't even bringing up the fact that in your original post you referred to the people who graffitied the signs on the highway as idiots. Actually, I will bring that up, lol. Why the fuck would we EVER make it legal for idiots (your word) to vandalize private property and destroy the values of their real estate?

you see, some form of legalization means SOME FORM it doesnt mean just houses or buildings. It can mean under bridges, or in sewers (not that i would want to go in one) or even old cement stacks that are sitting in the middle of fields. Where i ive there is this wall close to the train tracks (like 30-40 feet away) that has had graffiti on it and it was all erased until just recently where the wall has gotten old. More is on it but it looks like the D.I (i think that is who owns it ) doesnt care. Hell, i went there yesterday and more than i can remember was on it

One remarkably important point of graffiti is that it is straight in your face, meaning it will remain on private property even though it would be legalised elsewhere.

So you are saying that you want it to be legal for some bratty little mooseknuckle to draw his shitty little name all over a bridge or sewer that I PAY for in tax dollars? Just because something is rarely used or seen doesn't mean that some young asshole needs to write all over it. Hey hacker, your grandma is pushing the century mark and needs some style... bring her over, I want to brand her in the face with a can of GunMetal Grey spraypaint to bring her into the new age. Don't criticize me about it though because I consider it art. Oh, and drop your GI Joes and Hot Wheels off with me as well. I know you paid for them and all but I'd like to dye them all pink because I think they look too plain as they are.

Like I said before people are going to do graffiti regardless. And if there is a legal location people are going to abuse it. You'll have gang related violence because somebody painted over some dumb gang tag. I see no way to legalize this. It will be abused and even then people will still graffiti in other areas.

I would much rather have someone do it illegally so I can bitch at local security and law enforcement as opposed to local government. Makes me feel more justified.
