Modern RPGs are designed for lazy dolts. Someone realized that casual gamers don't like grinding for levels and items, so these days your typical RPG is basically an interactive story. You will make it through the majority of the game with minimal intentional leveling and minimal deaths. There will be maybe two or three bosses where you will need to grind levels to beat them, and one of them will be the end boss. Then, to placate the hardcore fans, they'll throw in a few super hard optional bosses that require some obtuse 40 turn strategy to beat.

I thought you hated grinding

Super Mario RPG pretty much was level grinding. What's interesting is it's there aren't infinite (not to mention invisible) enemies like in Final Fantasy games. The process is basically kill every motherfucker in the room, move onto the next one. Kill every motherfucker in the room, move onto the next one. Kill every motherfucker in the room, move onto the next one. Kill every motherfucker in the room, move onto to the boss.
Now that I think about it, for someone like me it would be more of a challenge to grind as little as possible. (Did I mention I murdered Culex at level 21?)

At the point where you fight all the ogres in the cave in FF, you really need to grind. It isn't an option. You can't go forward until you bulk up.
I always had fun with the Lufia style of enemies in dungeons.

I don't mind grinding when there's an actual goal and it's a means to get from Point A to Point B. I do NOT like grinding when it occurs in something like The Sims, Animal Crossing, or World of Warcraft where the entire game is nothing BUT grinding.
But if it eventually gets you to a "YOU WIN! GO DO SOMETHING ELSE!" screen, it's fine.

Yeah, but trying to get an ending out of a game that isn't a cliffhanger or allusion to a sequel nowadays is like trying to find a diamond in a rhinestone factory.

honestly i liked all of the final fantasy games that i've played in general, although i haven't really played II or III and i never even bothered with X-2 past the opening cut scene. also, besides the the first one, you never really NEEDED to grind, unless you wanted to acheive specific things such as getting all of the magic from the espers in VI, or learning all the abilities from equipment in IX. besides those cases i never found any place that i had to grind, if you actually did them, the later games offered enough side quests to fully prepare you for the final battle or the exceptionally hard dungeons.

I'd have to say that Tactics is my all-time favorite Final Fantasy, and one I highly recommend. The battle system's fun, the graphics are gorgous, and the story's engrossing.
Hell, you can even recruit Cloud through a special sidequest.

Square Enix has today announced a fully 3D, grounds-up remake of the seminal 1990 GameBoy RPG SaGa 2: Legend of the Secret Treasure via the pages of Weekly Shonen Jump. Released in America in 1991 as Final Fantasy Legend II, the game was the second in senior Square staffer/Last Remnant producer Akitoshi Kawauzu's wildly nonlinear RPG series that continued on to Romancing SaGa, SaGa Frontier, and Unlimited SaGa on various other platforms.
SaGa 2 featured an impressive (for the time) twelve worlds to explore, with a rare collaborative soundtrack by Square maestros Nobuo Uematsu and Kenji Ito. The remake looks be in the style of Square Enix's DS revivals of Final Fantasy III and IV, and will sport all-new character designs by Gen Kobayashi of The World Ends With You fame. SaGa 2 will see Japanese release some time in 2009. |

I'm currently playing FFIV for the SNES. Will likely jump to VI after I'm done with that. I'm really enjoying IV so far. One hell of a story, and good battle sequences, too. You even get a bard that attacks with MUSICAL NOTES! The dialog seems a bit simple, but it works.
While I understand and comply with those who hail the all-original and legendary NES version of FF1(comes with the ability to totally save game companies), I'm nonetheless siding with FF1 DoS. I am one who will more than likely play a remake over the original, unless I do get enjoyment out of originals, which I have. I do have a feeling that Syd is right about the "dumb down" thing, but I played DoS before NES, so naturally I couldn't tell any difference. Hell, the last time I really played NES FF1 was on the machine itself about.....oh, a decade and a half ago, and I didn't even know how the fuck an RPG worked back then. I do agree that DoS may just be quite easy for an RPG, since I buffed my heroes to about lv 7 or so even before I faced Garland, and pretty much cruised the rest of the way. Granting that, it was nonetheless a decent challenge for me, especially considering there were monsters that can petrify your party just by ATTACKING. It does seem like an easier version, but I'll be damned if you don't have to prepare yourself as the game gets farther on. Still, I'll more than likely grab the original on a ROM to get a real feel and see just which one really suits me.
FFII for DoS didn't really suck me in either. Likely the argument among people is that it's too easy as well, but for me, as far as an FF game goes, I just can't get into leveling separate abilities instead of the character itself.
FFVII was another game I played at a younger age. At that time, I knew very well what an RPG was, and got a pretty good ways on it. Epic story, flavorful characters, a well-made battle system, and a final boss battle that I'm not sure I'd look forward to slugging through(by that I mean the enormous creature that comes before Seph himself).
FFX was another good one. I got all the way to where you face those large black jellies for the first time, and had to stop; they were hard to beat for some reason, which made me worried that I didn't level up enough for that part. Seymour makes for some exciting, if not irritating, boss battles.
FFX-2 I've only really watched, not played. Sounds like a good one to try. My college friends described it as a game with "softcore porn."
Tactics I only played a little of, though it does look like a fun one. I also like Tactics Advance for GBA. Five races, tons of classes, and a hell of a battle system. The storyline is a bit simplistic for my tastes, though it stretches out well enough.
My vote? I don't have one. Just follow your heart and see what you like best. I'm not going to shoot out a particular order for similar games with different storylines.
Also, if you find yourself wanting a different RPG as a break from the FF series(if you even need one), I highly recommend the Lufia Series.
