I asked because I thought maybe Sony took out the chip that did PSOne emulation to save costs.

Even if they did, the Cell can easily emulate the PS1 hardware.

I mean look at the system requirements for the "PSx" PS1 emulator, it runs 100% on systems such as:

Pentium III Mobile, 256 MB RAM, 1000 Mhz
Onboard S3 SuperSavage/IXC 1179
Intel 8280 onboard sound

So, unless Sony just wanted to be lazy F-tards and not add in the emulation software, there is no reason any PS3 should not able to play PS1 games.

They have almost perfect software PS1 emulation on the PSP, as well.
