I'm surprised by how much I like 19letterslong's Silent Hill 1 LP. He and his buddy did a great job of blowing through a bunch of Sonic games while doing a mix of commentary and podcasting, but I thought them doing a Silent Hill LP would kill the mood. I've always wanted to see the game the whole way through, but I don't want to buy a PS1/PS2 just for it right now, and I frankly don't have the time lately. Unfortunately, most LPs are by people who know it inside and out, and love the game. Here's the problem with that:

-They typically go with subtitles "to preserve atmosphere." Wonderful, but watching them wander around in an exploration-based game puts me to sleep.

-They're experts, so they don't know how to share what's relevant. I watched a few where all they do is gush on the game's sound design while not explaining a single mechanic, or tell me what they're doing or why.

With this one, I'm able to see someone else play it for the first time, granting me that experience as well. He also has a buddy to talk through the game, so that they can help figure out the puzzles and plot so that there's not a whole bunch of tedious wandering and dying. The fact that two people are playing it and getting scared also really speaks to how well the game is made. The earlier episodes are kind of a mess with them going into a lot of chattiness and "yeah, fuck you monster" moments, but it's nice to see the view from someone else who hasn't played it yet without boring the piss out of me.

So here's to you Mrs. Robinson. People love you more- oh, nevermind.
