I really don't like Yoshi's voice in Galaxy2. I thought this sounds awful; it is so high-pitched and gay*. Then I went back to Sunshine and realized his voice was like that too. The difference is that Yoshi makes less noise in Sunshine. They should tone down the voice and use the Smash Bros. vfx.

I have to correct this. Yoshi's great exuberance for life which he cries out happily in pleasure are only when he flutter jumps in Sunshine. It's perfectly fine. I apologize for this outburst.

However, if you watch the last shine with Luigi in Galaxy 2 it becomes extremely irritating and should be toned down.

Luigi's Mansion is a new IP because it was Luigi's own game. It featured new controls and mechanics that radically differed from other Mario games. Just like SMW: Yoshi's Island is not a Mario game, but a Yoshi game (ala Yoshi's Story).

And yes I can decide what is a game and what is not a game. Electroplankton is not a game. Nor is Wii Music or Wii Fit. They are software for non-gamers.

For the record I agree that DLC at launch is a stupid thing, unless it's like what gamestop where the offer a stupid little character mod, like the guitar in Brutal Legend having expansive DLC at launch is annoying.
steam is okay with DLC, even if it is launched a week or two later, most of the time it starts off on a sale.

Also with art, while it does play a huge part in a games appeal it is one part of the whole. I play games for a well written story. Game's like certain final fantasies, Steambot Chronicles, Majoras Mask (had a bit more plot than OoT), Skyrim, and various other games I've played did this for me.
Games like Skyward Sword seemed to have a lackluster plot which made the game feel like tedious puzzle solving. That isn't to say puzzle games can't be good, most of them have a unique visual style and unique puzzle elements to make up for a plot.
Then there's games that have a good balance of everything, like Portal.

I dunno where I'm going with this.

OK, can we stop sucking Skyrim's dick? There were like 4 textures for the ground. I know this seems like a small gripe, but if we're condemning entire games on polygon count, then small gripes are fair game. Not much is more immersion-breaking then looking out over a vast, open field with rolling green hills... and realizing that the entire ground as far as the eye can see is the same square yard of grass repeated to infinity on a perfect grid. It looks fucking awful.

Three major things will occur in parallel to deal with the exact situation you are describing:
1. Large studio evolution to deal with huge cost
2. The rise of quality indie games
3. More fremium games and DLC

Let me start off by saying that in the second batch of Skyrim screenshots you posted, #2 and #3 make the game look significantly more appealing.

1. I already told you larger studios are likely to evolve. Smaller teams and smaller budgets for individual projects, as that will allow them to experiment with more diverse projects and develop new IPs.

2. There are already tons of quality indie games. That's part of what's hurting the big budget studios. You can make the best game ever game, but the pie's being divided more ways. Also quality indie games tend to look more like SMB1 and FF6 than Skyrim.

3. DLC is also what's part of killing the industry. People are pissed that they're paying $60 for a game and a week later additional content is being sold to them on top of that. It is one of the #1 sources of video game consumer dissatisfaction and overall video game sales have declined since major studios started pushing it aggressively. PC Gamers are less likely to care about this because DLC goes on sale for PC games much more often than it does for console games.

Back to the original topic, games as I get older. I find that I generally want one of two things when I play video games these days. I either want something that's new/quirky/interesting or I want something that's completely familiar. So if I'm going to play an RPG, it's most likely going to something made by Square Enix, Blizzard, or Nintendo. I've played Skyrim before, because I've played RPGs before. I'm going to play the same old comfortable formula, I'd rather visit the same old comfortable worlds, ones filled references intended to appeal to me. I've never played an Elder Scrolls game, so I have no attached to the brand. So I have absolutely no reason to give their rehash of the same old story a shot over other developers who have already proven themselves to me and got me to invest in them emotionally.

2. Have you seen Trine, Torchlight, Orcs Must die, Frozen Synapse, Terraria, or Bastion. Many are cell shaded or use other techniques, but they all do so in ways that work.

3. Darksiders 2 is an example of how DLC should never be done. Borderlands was an example of how it can be a great addition. Blessing or curse is dependent upon the company pushing it out. Some are using it to finish the original game, while others are truly adding new content that is well beyond that.

As for Elder Scroll games, I have only played Oblivion and Skyrim. The two games are very similar, with Skyrim almost being an upgrade to Oblivion's flaws. They both have the size of an MMO but not the multiplayer. I'm not sure what other game I would compare them to other than Fallout 3. I would skip Oblivion in favor of Skyrim at this point if you ever have interest in the series.

It happens to be the game I am actively playing, which is why I am discussing it more than others, however we can pick any game you like. As for the textures, I am using the high resolution pack, and quite honestly have no idea what you are talking about. Yes if you go to the Throat of the World, you will be high enough that everything looks the same. If you are walking on snow, it looks like snow. Grass looks like grass, rocks, like rocks. Most jagged rock does look the same and the dungeons definitely use the same texture for the same type of dungeon, but the textures themselves are complex in my experience.

If you own the game on PC, you can use the mods to change just about everything if that floats your boat.

As for the polygon count goes, I am mostly directing that at Skyward Sword.

While I also find less time for gaming now that I'm a married adult, I tend to feel that gaming is better now than it's ever been. I guess my tastes and interests haven't been negatively impacted by most of the current trends. The only current trend I dislike is motion control, and I hesitate to even call MC a trend these days because most people seem not to care for it.
