7th Saga. If you even think of playing as a non fighting class you just lose.

The US release of 7th Saga has a nasty glitch that doesn't level you up as much as it should. Your opponents, though, do. That's one of the main reasons it's such a bitch.

This explains some things. When I was a kid my mom made me take the game back to the rental store because I spent an entire half hour just yelling at the game. Like not even playing anymore, I was just wringing it out.
As a matter of fact I beat that game, playing as Lux(the robot) with Esuna on your side(the elf).

The ending is lame, you get sent back in time, fight the endboss, which is like a giant green guy with chains, and get killed. But, your soul is reincarnated into a new body, which becomes the king who is killed and impersonated in the beginning of the game. That is to say, your reward is a bloody stable time loop.

You've got to be quick, avoid overleveling, pick your partner right, and generally get lucky because the biggest danger in the entire game is not the enemies but your rival. So let me explain...

At different points in the game, one of the seven playable characters will be selected as an enemy. The dungeon at about the same time that you get the water rune is the one that's guaranteed, but the sky rune can be picked up if you wait too long(in game timer), and theres other situations like that. Now then, unlike most enemies, this rival's level will be several above yours no matter what, and they get an HP boost. Now then, depending on the rival, this can be a killer. Esuna can wipe in a single shot, and take more hits than you can, the dwarf is really tough, but the worst is Valsu(the priest). At a certain level, he'll learn the spell elixir, an expensive spell that restores his HP and MP. You simply CANNOT kill him fast enough to keep him from using it, and as "bosses", mutes and the like do not work. HE IS LITERALLY UNBEATABLE.

The game gets harder at world two, but you can at least grit your teeth through it. Its the shenanigans above that make it a bitch dejour.

Try beating 7th Saga without a second ally. Holy shit!
What kind of monster would do that?

Back To The Future on the NES. What a fucking piece of shit that was.

Hylide, Ninja Gaiden, and Ghosts 'N Goblins were all serious contenders too, except that I eventually got a Game Genie and then I sort of lost perspective on their difficulty.

But Back To The Future was unbeatable to me, even with a Game Genie. The reason being is that there wasn't a universal code for infinite lives, there were level specific ones. There was a universal code for infinite time, though. Unfortunately, you could only input three codes at once. Also, there wasn't an infinite lives code for the last level.

Also, fuck Game Genie. Pretty sure that piece of shit broke my original NES.

Godhand. I still haven't beaten it but I plan to one day. I'll just have to get really frustrated an need an outlet for my anger. I love that game despite how often it kicks my ass. After playing for a little while I begin to hit a groove where I actually do good though.

I tried doing it with the Alien dude, solo. I actually got to the end of the game but couldn't beat it. I then got frustrated and gave up years ago. I'm not gonna waste my time trying anymore.

Battle of Olympus was a bitch. I think I finally beat it about 13 years after it's release.

The original Ninja Gaiden, the Xbox version, and Devil May Cry 3.

Got all four disks and the videoplay. The mirror match is an absolute bitch and you basically have to cheat by spamming an attack called the Yes Maam Kablaam, canceling it with a dodge, and using the heat it granted you to go into super god mode. With the right selection of punches you can chain them together until you have a legit shot.

The rest is just balls out determination. Its got that real good old school feel of mastery, where because getting hit pretty much means you lost the fight and the most effective dodge has a real small window and leaves standing right next to them you are forced to get real good real fast. Old NES games are like that, most modern ones are not.

For some reason, I have never been able to beat Rush 'N Attack. Maybe not the hardest game I've ever played...but I never did beat it. Every once in a while I break it out, but I still suck. I stll have no idea how that game ends.

I've never, ever, seen the Astral Plane or the Wizard of Yendor. And, like you, I've been playing for years... always coming back for more, though =)

It's too late now because you haven't been PAYING ATTENTION.

F-Zero GX, that game is brutal. I can not even unlock all the stages, and certainly not complete the story mode. Its a great game though.

Don't give up. If you fail, Chris' story in the first game will definitely not have happened instead of only probably. Very Happy

I've never beaten Adventures of Dr. Franken for SNES. I've always considered it pretty damn difficult.

I hate Billy Mitchell.

Now that i have time to think of it more. I found quite a few games i owned hard as a kid and i only beat a few of them recently and some i still haven't got round to completing.

I've played Ghost and Goblins a bit and still think it's hard but i never owned it as a kid since i don't have a NES. I've ordered Super Ghouls n Ghosts though so time will tell if that will be appearing on this list.

Games i found hard as a kid:
Buster Busts Loose
Super Star Wars

I could beat Buster Busts Loose now but Super Star Wars my god.

The furthest i ever got was to the Escape Mos Eisley level and you have to run through this area full of bombs then fight the boss. That boss to me was unbeatable.

I played recently and i couldn't get past the Cantina level. I may give it another shot now.

Also the inside the sandcrawler level. It's totally fine up until you have to jump across the lava and Luke decides to double jump into the fucking lava.

Super Ghouls N Ghosts isn't nearly as hard as Ghosts N Goblins. But it's a great game, I still have fun playing it on a regular basis.

I just completed the game there for the first time since i first played it probably over 10 years ago.

*basks in sense of satisfaction*

There were some total bitch bits though.

More specifically the bit at the end where you have to hit the death star weak point. I didn't have a clue what you were doing i knew you had to shoot a place but it didn't even tell you where.
