I just didn't want to be the first guy to say "this could have taken place in africa instead of an alien planet"
that general guy who was drinking coffee while blowing up the tree is pretty awesome, too. I liked the part where he felt that shooting at the people trying to escape was more important than putting on his oxygen mask, and the part where he no sold BEING ON FIRE to try and stop the guy from sabotaging his ship. |
He was the best part of the movie.

Saw the thing in IMAX 3D. A friend reviewed it and gave it a 3.5/4 (he gave Sherlock Holmes 2.5/4). The visuals are damn impressive and I can tell there's a whole underwater-influence to everything from the bioluminescence to the jellyfish-like seeds and even the rhino/hammerhead hybrid. I knew what I'd be watching but the ride was still nice.

Cut Avatar sex scene will be included in DVD, script is online
Star Zoe Saldana has confirmed that a “sex scene” was cut from box office juggernaut Avatar, probably to ensure a PG-13 rating. She described the scene recently and it sounds just like the scenario in which the Návi pacify by the flying banshee creatures by melding the tentacles from their tails. (Those scenes, to quote a review I can’t find again, were somewhat “rapey”.) Director James Cameron recently put the entire script online, and you can read the deleted scene. (In an image below.) It’s not that racy and sounds less worthy of an Rrating than any of the violent scenes. |

I liked Avatar. As far as the plot goes, you can pretty much figure out everything a half hour before it happens, but I guess this didn't bother me too much since I knew it was going to be the somewhat standard nature versus technology deal.
It's not the greatest movie I've seen, but I can't really point out anything in it that was abhorrently bad either.

Big fucking surprise: Avatar won Golden Globe for BEST MOTION PICTURE and BEST DIRECTOR...
http://www.goldenglobes.org/nominations/
I'm not saying it's a bad movie; I do think it's a good movie.
However, I don't think it is THAT good of a movie...
Then again, it's the Golden Globes; no one cares about those, but it gives you a sense of how the Oscars will go around it...

Saw it tonight finally, and I'll actually admit that I enjoyed it.
Is it Best Picture? Not at all, although it's really hard for me to think of another movie that was better than this, outside of Inglourious Basterds, it was just a really bad year for movies.
There's one absolute thing that saved this movie, and it's amazing that I'm actually typing this because I've never been a fan of the gimmick, but 3D fucking saved it. I would hate to watch this movie at home or even without the 3D concept, because it's one of the few examples I can actually say it benefited the movie. Also, this is the first movie I've seen in 3D in about 10 years...so the days of green/red lenses are done apparently, which I didn't know about. The glasses we used were pretty good, my only complaint is I started to get a headache about an hour into the movie. There's seriously points in the movie where you want to swat the shit floating around, since it really does look like it's close to your face.
Once again, this movie is entirely a gimmick...a good gimmick...but a gimmick nonetheless. It's also one of the very very very few examples of a movie which actually seemed to do a pretty good job with CGI, and I hate CGI. It did take me a while to get used to the characters, I mean they are pretty retarded looking.
As far as the story? This is what you get when you combine "Dances With Wolves", "The Thirteenth Floor" and "Fern Gully" together. And the set up for plot devices at times is absolutely laughable, especially during the early scenes where Ridley and Irwin Wade discuss why they're really there. It's no more than 20 minutes into the movie when you know exactly what's going to happen. And why is it that every single movie that is set in the future uses ground troops? Bomb the shit out of those blue fuckers, you can nuke their fucking planet or something, especially since you're not following the rules of war anyways, all you're interested in is some rich mineral that is just the basis of almost every sinister plot with a corporate weasel. And I never really understood what the main guy's thing was...he is supposed to be Neo's doppleganger or something, they rushed so quickly into the reasoning he's there, it just seemed weird.
But story aside, pretty fun movie. The battle scene at the end was pretty decent, despite it's obvious flaws (arrows can penetrate all the sudden?) and I really liked the main villian, even though I wish he would've "crazied" out just a bit more. I did get a HUGE laugh when his robot pulled out a giant knife...that was SO cartoonish it was awesome.
Overall...if you're going to see it...see it in 3D, if you wait to rent this movie...you probably won't like it as much. And if this wins Best Picture, it'll only show how shitty of a year it was for movies.

It overjoys to NO end to know that Gone With the Wind, Star Wars, and E.T. are the REAL best grossing movies of all time. A small bit of my faith in humanity is restored.

Yeah, I love how everyone always gets excited by numbers. If were talking about actual numbers, movies are going to break records every few years because shit gets to be more expensive.
It's like comparing Bill Gates to John D. Rockafeller, while Gates has more money in the numbers, Rockafeller was the richer man by far.

Gone with the Wind the movie is blah, but the the book is super lame. Margaret Mitchell was an intense racist and it bugs me that the book is considered a classic.

I like Gone With the Wind, but I see your point. Mainstream society seems to villianize the South during the Civil War, but you gotta remember the rich white plantation owners weren't fighting the war, the poor white people who had no slaves did.

I really liked Avatar, but Inglourious Basterds is still my favorite movie of 2009.

Me too Icewarm. I heard a lot of people saying good things about The Hurt Locker, and it was ok...but personally as far as being all around entertained by a movie, Inglourious Basterds wins hands down.

I don't see what the big deal was with Hurt Locker...it was Three Kings without the humor, gold and Ice Cube.

Are you saying Ice Cube makes a movie better?

No, I'm just making a comparision. Don't get me wrong...Hurt Locker was ok...but there wasn't really any real story there...no real drama and just a series of events that play out to absolutely no drama at all.

Not reading 3 pages of thread to see if anyone else has pointed this out, but isn't it funny that James Cameron made an anti-technology movie with state of the art technology? And isn't it ironic that a movie that condemns greed has become one of the most profitable movies of all time?

Cameron's secret ingredient in his recipe for success is double standards.
