Yeah, violence is definitely on the rise. That happens in times of recession. The late 70s were pretty bad, and that violence continued in urban areas well into the 80s because it takes cities longer to recover. That's why a lot of the sci-fi and comics that came out in the early 80s were so nihilistic; people didn't think things would ever get any better and assumed they would only get worse.
In general, unemployment = violence. |
It is true... people really do think that they have nothing to lose.
I'm not sure that this type of perspective can be changed for the masses, but I do know that sensationalism in news media fucks this up much worse than it needs to be.
