Weebles wobble... but they don't fall down.

Perhaps the same can be said of all religions.

Well, think of it this way. In the beginning, there was nothing. Then suddenly, there was something. The origin of the universe is one of the greatest philosophical and scientific problems we face. One theory is that time is not linear, but cyclical. Thus, the supercondensed matter that exploded in the Big Bang and formed our universe was the same matter left over from the implosion of the same universe. If that were true, then we were here on this same forums eons before, and we will be here again.

Several theories are on the first page. Basically, the kicking ass people were clones, but the ones that suck were actual humans, because they couldn't make clones anymore. Or something.

So here's my theory, based on this 'time is a circle' and 'Star Wars is the future is the past' stuff.

The Big Bang was the Death Star exploding. So Star Wars is in the future and the past. Problem solved.

An interesting point.

Is time cyclical or is it rewound and replayed over and over again?

Lets assume that the universe was created via a "Big Bang". Mass explodes outward until it is slowed, stopped and eventually pulled back towards a center point via gravitational pull.

An interesting point, although there's abundant evidence that the universe is accelerating outward.

That is because we are in the expansion phase. Eventually we will reach the end and will revert into the contraction phase.

The expansion itself is accelerating. If the universe was to eventually collapse under its own gravitational pull, you'd expect to see the expansion slow down. But the opposite is happening. That means there's some yet unknown cause driving the accelerated expansion, which has been dubbed "dark energy". As long as we don't know what dark energy is and how it works, it's hard to make accurate predictions about the future of the universe, but right now all the evidence points to the "Big Crunch" that you are talking about to be the least likely outcome.

It depends on the true nature of the source of the acceleration, which is purportedly dark energy (possibly matter as well). If it is indeed an explosion, then we're still in the early stages of that explosion causing the acceleration.

I mean, think about the magnitude of an explosion where after 13 3/4 billion years, it's still close to the initial stages of said explosion. Like I said, it depends on the true nature of of the acceleration, as we're only hypothesizing at this point. I think it's very possible it's not a typical explosion.

I'm clueless obviously, but I can't wait to see what other astronomical discoveries are made during my lifetime... if Armageddon doesn't occur.

The big three universe deaths (big crunch, infinite expansion, and heat death) are so far removed that its considerable hubris to think humanity will even survive long enough for it to be an issue.

We'll be killed by Predators first. Arnold has to die sometime, and then they'll be back.

This thread smoldered and eventually burned out. What is so wrong about that? The idea is that when a thread is no longer viable for discussion, it should remain untouched in the archives. Unless it becomes relevant again, you shouldn't post to it any more.

But shit happened after they blew up the Death Star...
