Last time I looked, the federally mandated "healthy" food they serve barely passes for "food" at all.

Lunch was $1.50 for the hot lunch when I wasin HS, or you could pay $1.75 (as I did every day) for a sub. The subs had real bread, real deli meat, and real produce, and were well worth the extra 25 cents. Healthy food is available, you just have to choose it over pizza and other shit.

Man... I wish my school had that option.

There was a mini salad bar, but I saw too many people spit into it to even think about doing that.

Oh, and the number of people I saw spit into it was exactly one. That was enough for me to never ever eat out of it.

The food we get is either fries like macdonalds fries with BBQ rib or chicken sandwich or hamburger.then there is a pizza line and a nacho or salad line

I usually get fries with chicken sandwich

I remember how sometime in the later parts of my freshman year of high school ('98-'99 school year), the Snapple machine in the cafeteria would somehow always be off during my lunch period. Yet strangely enough, the machine would be on when I passed by the cafeteria on my way outside to study hall, or passing by it on my way to English class.

My friend figured out how to scam vending machines with conveyor belts out of free pop.

Well, we had good, healthy food. A lot of soy stuff too, as my home town is the Soy Capital.

But it was tasty and you wear always able to get crap. But the bad stuff cost more while the good stuff was either free or cheap.

But we had shitloads of vending machines. Kids in our school had parents that worked at Cocacola so they had vending machines all around the inside while a few years later a kid's dad worked at Pepsi so we had pepsi all around the outside of the building. It was fairly cheap and they took requests on drinks.

But in the lunch room it was dominated by Snapple and some fruit drink. my senior year they put pop in the lunch room but it was only diet or the Zero crap. Of both brands, so that was nice.

That's absolutely hilarious. I used to punch and kick the vending machines to get free stuff in middle school, never had that happen to me, though. Cool

Well it isn't entirely free, it's more of a two for one.

The ones with conveyor belts you see, they have a door between the inside of the vending machine and the slot where you grab the pop. What you do is put your money in, order a drink of your choice, then reach in the drink slot and hold that door shut. The belt will push the pop towards the door, and after a few seconds will detect an error and go back to the bottom, with the pop on the belt, and spit your money back out.

Now put your money back in, order a pop (I suggest one in the _1 or _2 slot) then when it goes to give you your new pop, it'll drop the first one out first, so you grab that fucker quick and let the belt drop your new pop down. Bam, two can drink for the price of one Cool

My freshman year, you had 3 options. You could get your lunch with whatever they were serving that day (sometimes it was good, sometimes garbage). You could get the same lunch except you could substitute a cheeseburger for the entree. You could also get a salad from the salad bar.

The year after that, they did away with the cheeseburger option with the regular lunch as well as the salad bar. Instead, they had a different lunch line you could go through and get Pizza Hut pizza, Tony's pizza, cheeseburgers, chicken sandwiches, fries, Taco Bell burritos, nachos, ice cream, and some other stuff. They called it the Tiger corner (after our school mascot obviously). Free lunches didn't apply to the Tiger Corner. If you got free lunch, you had to get the regular school lunch.

My freshman year, there were no vending machines. My sophomore year, they put in Snapple and Fruitopia machines. My junior year, we had Coke machines. But they were only one during lunch and after school.

i always qualified for free lunch (living in the projects helped, as well as receiving food stamps and welfare at a young age)

anyhow, elementary school i got free lunch and the lunch was meh. sometimes good sometimes bad.

middle school, the food was whatev. was worse than elementary actually, but they had a 'snack bar' where you had the option of buying junk food or even pizza if necessary.

high school, free lunch was the bomb. and we had the 'snack bar' as well, but the choices were much more replete than middle school and that food was good too.

middle school, we had a vending machine that kids would put mexican coins in to get sodas, until they fixed that.

high school we had vending machines, but i cant recall the prices. mostly cause i never bought anything out of the vending machines, and cause its been 9 years since high school

When I went to high school, they punished anyone who decided to drop coin on the vending machine with chips like Doritos and stuff during the time classes were held because they were intended for the students doing after school activities.

I also remember some shenanigans being pulled with one group at a table singing Happy Birthday and it wound up in some sort of bastardized round that threatened the establishment enough to threaten that they wouldn't offer the usual massive basket of fries (which some people would get in lieu of a normal school lunch) for the rest of the week. They never went through with it, likely because they sold so many *shrug*.

I think I know what hacker is talking about. The prices in my vending machine are either ridiculously overcharged, or just kind of unfortunate; take for example, the packs of sugarfree spearmint gum in the machine. They cost fifty-five cents each. I've found the case being with my friends as well as myself usually being "Wow, I really wish I could get that gum, but I can't because I don't have a f***ing nickel Sad ." That, and a freaking slim jim costs $1.25.

As for the lunches, my school doesn't particularly overprice, but they don't offer much in the way of health; usually they serve crap like mozzerella sticks, chicken patty sandwiches, fries, and jalepino poppers (which, I admit, are godly). There is a salad bar, but a salad costs $3.50. *sigh*

So instead of using vending machines, bring shit from home. They still allow that, don't they? Or do they put lunches through metal detectors, too?

Seriously, school lunch wasn't an issue for me. Back in the late 90s when I was in high school, we had what was called an Open Lunch, meaning our lunch was an hour long, and we could leave campus to go eat. I never used vending machines, I'd just walk down the hill (lucky me for going to high school on the top of the highest fucking hill in town, but I now can legitimately tell "When I was your age, I walked uphill to school" type stories) and hit up McDonald's or something.

Not only is that not right, that's not even wrong. It's a meaningless statement. Saying something is "one molecule away" from plastic is like saying a farm is one letter away from a fart. Water is "one molecule away" from being explosive hydrogen gas.

In JR High I often wouldn't even eat lunch. Our lunch period was 35 minutes, and the wait in line if you didn't get out of class early would be well over 20 minutes. A lot of people would get their lunch just as the bell was ringing.

If you did manage to get food, it was usually just a very low quality fruit cup, a slice of Elios style pizza, and a tiny milk carton for 1.50. Or you could get chicken noodle soup and a PB&J.

High School... Oh God, I was too busy playing a very house ruled form of D&D with Fernin and a few other friends to remember wtf we ate. I don't remember it being bad though. At least in that school though lunch period was damn near an hour, so you actually had the option of getting food. That and we had to have attendance taken at lunch, and since our table only ever had 5 people at it, and we were all quick at getting there and sitting down and being the friends with the lunch room aides, so we usually got first in line.

I have a sig because I was told to. Now leave me be about it.

We managed to get 3 for 1 once. You can only fit so many bottles on the conveyor belt.

Oh I have indeed had my salting experiences. Except the ones I remember that they made from back in the day (like the old Dr. Pepper ones) when you squirted the saltwater in, shit tons of change popped out. Some just dropped sodas. Oh well.
