I now understand how the guy did it. If you watch the video, the guy's metal blade never goes through a boss while in their flashing state, meaning he changed the game config to allow for constant rapid fire to work. I was having issues in that I couldn't kill stuff fast enough. With that enabled (second thing under config, one click to the right) this becomes very possible with no e-tanks. Woohoo.
