Really, I used to not mind all of the WWII games. I have an interest in the time period, but from what I've seen of the new Call of Duty, I'd be willing to let the genre take a break. That trailer they made for it with the "GNO PHEAR!!!" phrases and hard rock soundtrack are just insulting to veterans, and make us gamers look like dumbasses. I am a massive fan of the Brother in Arms games, though. They nail the atmosphere just right, and aren't as jingoistic as the other shooters.

luckily I've kept my playing of the musou games to a minimum. I have ninety nine nights (frustratingly hard) DW: Gundam (I'm a gundam mark, sue me) and samurai warriors 2, which seemed pretty cool. I was considering getting dynasty warriors 6, but am waiting for it to get cheaper.
but yes, this is exactly what I mean.

well that's just it man, how many times do you need to nail the atmosphere? it's still the same WWII that I've been fighting since medal of honor first came to the sony playstation like a decade ago.

It's different to me. The characters actually act like they have some kind of vulnerability, the gameplay is more about using your brain and environment, and the story is more about trying to survive mentally and physically against the strains of war, instead of making yourself into a one-man army capturing Berlin. Like I said, it's gampeplay and context over setting for me, but I can understand how someone who's not really into the setting can get tired of it, but how many days do you think it will take for a game site writer to be fired after he complains about too many medieval RTS games or turn-based anime-style Japanese RPG's?

what I mean to say, is that if the same game, with the same gameplay, the same context, and the same setting gets a new installment every year, why buy it? youre spending sixty bucks a year on basically the same game with slight tweaks.

I know, right? Romance XI was like that too. I remember back in the day when everything was ported over to consoles from the arcade and various PCs. The times, they are a-changin'.

If a game can improve its setting, then that's fine. Mega Man 1-6 changed very little in gameplay, each year only adding new bosses or a new move with different levels, but it was the same mechanics and story. I'm not bashing it, because Mega Man's core gameplay was fun, and they would add some differences between each episode to keep it fresh, and I enjoy the vast majority of the games. I'm not saying I'd keep buying it if it was a bad game merely out of habit. I keep buying the BiA series, because it's got a good, continuous story, interesting characters, unique settings (within the WWII genre anyway), and they expand upon the gameplay with each installment.
A game can improve without changing in my opinion. Otherwise, why do people always praise the re-releases of old games?

People always say "too many WWII shooters" is killing the genre, but where are the people who complain about too many medieval RTS's or animal mascot platformers. It's not the setting as much as the mechanics and atmosphere that make a genre stale. This game is such a breath of air because it tosses out testerone-fueled dumbasses saying catchphrases before a kill in favor of a game that relies upon a feeling and atmosphere as well as oft-used play mechanics. When you're being chased over skyscrapers and through buildings by police, making acrobatic running moves and using your surroundings to your advantage, it creates a hectic atmosphere that feels great once you're finished, but still pulling you into the game, |
YES!! Sony and Microsoft need to follow Nintendo's path, not necessarily the controller, but innovative game play. I don't want to play rehashed fps's with upgraded graphics. Real time lighting, specular and bump mapping, and all the power to pretty up an old concept sucks. Make a new experience.

I finally rented it today, and I think it's pretty bad-ass. It's going by quick, so I wouldn't buy it full price, but the experience is really fun with challenging, yet rewarding gameplay. I found that I got so excited that I had sat there for three hours, and devoured two cups of coffee without even noticing.
My biggest problem with it is actually the bloom-it's so bright in some areas that I actually can't see at all, which made jumping way too much of a hassle. I really don't see why people are ripping into it as hard as they are, I haven't had this much fun with a game since Skate.
