The wambulance bit was hilarious. Personally, I prefer telling someone to eat a wamburger and some french cries, but I can't think of what game to put that to at the moment.
Yeah, the IPS thing was a hassle for me when I first used it to get a cool-looking ROM hack for LttP. Turns out I had to copy the original ROM file to create a completely unused(as in I didn't open it to play it at all) ROM file, then use Lunar IPS to patch THAT file before I could play the patch. If you play the ROM file even once, it stays original no matter how many times you patch it.
If this was explained above, my apologies, I just kinda skimmed through everything.
I've found a few hacks that were showcased on youtube that look neat. Maybe you can get an idea or two there before really digging around.

I've never had any problems wtih virtuaNES092e. I used the sound recorder to make a CD of music from the first six mega man games. Not like I need the emulator for the actual games anyway, I own 350+ video game cartridges, so I don't really use it for anything other than recording music and playing a translated Sweet Home.

I just looked up Sweet Home after you mentioned it. How did I never hear of this game!? It looks fucking awesome, and the reviews on it are great.
