I liked fatal frame. III really knows how to ramp up tension. By the second half your terrified to walk around anywhere in the mansion. Even the house brings a few jack-in-the-box type scares.
RE4 didnt have as much tension, but it could do it without leaving the main character nigh helpless.
Regenerators are the perfect example of taking something from another game (heaven smiles), and making it even better by putting it in a game with fantastic gameplay.

anyone play clocktower 3? I dug the idea of not being able to defend yourself, and having to rely more on hiding and running. it could have been done better though.

Silent Hill is pretty much my religion. Resident Evil is my addiction.
Resident Evil is like the airplane read which is Heroes.
Silent Hill is like the finely written novel which is Lost.
Each has their place and time.
I do think "Silent Hill" had the best story and execution out of all the games of either series. "Silent Hill 2" had some more great ideas and excellent presentation.
The REmake and RE0 were steps in the right direction, RE4 a step back, Separate Ways an improvement... But RE2 is still the king of all RE games.
I really can't choose between the franchises. However, I do see RE as being a series of B movies and Silent Hill to be a collection of great horror novels.

I did like Clock Tower 3, but seriously Clock Tower First Fear and Clock Tower were the definitive Clock Tower games!

I didn't really like that whole "point and click" thing. it was insanely difficult using a playstation controller.

The first Silent Hill was much better than any Resident Evil game, and was really the only game that actually gave me the creeps. As a series though I would say Resident Evil because I dislike the games after Silent Hill 2 and I pretty much like all the Resident Evil games besides 3 and the online ones.

It better be longer!
It probably will be given the loose ends for everyone not Travis or Alessa and disappear halfway through the game.
How the hell did "Resident Evil: Code Veronica" get away a pre-Director's Cut version? It sucks without the extra scenes.

I think I already told you that I thought RE:CV is the worst looking RE game. At the time, the character models looked better than the Playstation games (as did the cinemas), but the levels and enemies were poorly, poorly designed. The script was also lacking quality compared to Resident Evil 2... until the Wesker scenes were added later to fill in some gaps and give the game an ending.

I'd say I like em equally, but I HATED that abandoned apartment running around in the dark part of SH2
Also, I enjoyed the Silent Hill Movie so there.

I didn't mean he wasn't in it, but his scenes that justified his existence in the game were not added until later.

Wesker: "Greetings! You must be the lovely Claire Redfield."
Claire: "Who are you?"
Wesker: "Lets just say that I’m a ghost, coming back to haunt your...dear brother."
Claire: "Wesker?!"
Wesker: "It seems there’s not much explaining to do is there? I was the one who attacked this island. Who'd of though you'd be hanging about?"
(Wesker laughs)
Wesker: "All the better for me, now that the cat dragged in this nice surprised, your ever so caring brother. He'll definitely show up. I must thank you for being such good bait."
Claire: "I don't know what went on between you two, but you have him all wrong, my brother's not the kind of person you think he is."
(Wesker grabs Claire by the throat)
Wesker: "I despise Chris!"
Claire: "What are you going to do to him?"
(Wesker slaps Claire to the ground)
(Wesker steps on Claire's shoulder)
Weskers: "Oh how your brother will be surprised to see you die"
(Ear piece beeps)
Wesker: "What? What is it? Stay there, I’m coming."
(Wesker kicks Claire in the face)
Wesker: "It appears you may be of some further use to me, I’m going to let you live...a little longer."
(Wesker's eye's glow red)
(Wesker leaves and Claire gets up) |
Let's take this scene for example. First off, it's what's called a character introduction, he doesn't just magically appear. Now, we probably could've ascertained that Wesker invaded the island in the original cut, this just spells it out. However, we're given much more of Wesker's motivations and his personal vendetta against Chris; a major improvement over a brief scene later. This also gives more insight into his thought process. With Chris going dark, Wesker intentionally attacked the base because Claire was there. While Wesker's goal is to obtain the T-Veronica virus he managed to figure out a way to lure Chris out of hiding as a bonus. It's less coincidence and more ingenious scheming. The worst kinds of stories are the ones where stuff just happens and fall into place (unless explained though fate/destiny/God, but that's another story altogether).
Wesker's character was also strengthened in the redone fight with Alexia. He's less of a laughable welp. By bringing him back, Capcom is making Wesker the series' main antagonist (or Nemesis? haha :[ ). As the saying goes: The stronger your antagonist, the stronger your protagonist.
And as I mentioned Code Veronica X has an ending with the final Wesker battle. He doesn't just disappear. Wanna know how crappy the original Code Veronica was? Read the novelization, because even S.D. Perry couldn't figure out how to make it all work or explain it. Plus, we're given an actual piece of the RE mythology by revealing Wesker took Steve's body. Okay, Steve lost his father, cried like a bitch, and then turned into the Hulk and died. That's sad. But to me having his infected body still in play and in Wesker's hands actually strengthens the stakes of the series. For a series as poorly self contained as Resident Evil, this is essential to keep fans coming back, cause Chris shouting out "We gotta destroy Umbrella... Let's finish this once and for all!" isn't enough to do it, because everyone's been saying that since the end of 2. That promise just means less and less every time we hear it. (Not to mention, Capcom said fuck it and skipped over the downfall completely for RE4... but that's also another story...)
At least with Wesker not leaving empty handed he's much more of a threat, rather than being a joke like some cartoon villain such as Skeletor or Cobra Commander who are only left shouting "I'll get you next time!" while they run away. Looking at it, Wesker actually won. S wanted a sample of the T-Veronica virus. They originally told him to get Alexia, but bringing back Steve is still a success. His only failure is he didn't get to kill Chris. And at least in the real ending we see it wasn't from a lack of trying. Wesker retreats because he has to, not because he's a pussy who gets bitch slapped by some mutant and chickens out.
I'm really sorry if you can't tell how much better the game is improved by those extra scenes... Well, at least the story side.
Edit: And to clear things up, I'm not saying RE:CVX is a perfect game. The script still has problems (mainly because Capcom doesn't take the mythology seriously and they write it as they go along). Just that CVX is an improvement over the original, like the Miami Vice director's cut.

I actually got a ton of DC games at once and Code Veronica was included. My fav Resident Evil is easily 2 after playing 1 2 and 3. Would i like Code Veronica or hate it?

I'm pretty sure the original argument here was that the game still had it's merits before those scenes were added, but thanks for taking the time to write me a book.
at the end of the day, wesker (although I love him) really wasn't much of a character. he wasn't supposed to survive the first game, but idiots kept begging for his return because he was cool and wore sunglasses basically. he was forcefully inserted into code veronica at the last minute to please these people and really wasn't nessecary, so in my opinion, considering things would have been fine without his inclusion to begin with, those scenes weren't responsible for making the game playable.
if that really were the case, capcom wouldn't have felt the need to package the game with a playable demo of devil may cry and advertise it as a selling point.
since the decision to make him magically come back to life, capcom has been running backwards and stumbling over themselves to try and flesh his character out more and have been looking for places to forcefully insert him into the past of RE to do this. sometimes it doesn't even make sense or it contradicts itself.
The thing that keeps resident evil going is not always "lets finish umbrella!" so much as the side stories and different ocurrances, such as jill being on the other side of raccoon city during the time of RE2(RE3), or leon sending someone to investigate another island prior to RE:CV(RE survivor) or hell, claire's whole screnario during RE:CV. if you really want to hound on something, you should have picked why capcom decided to make resident evil zero about a whole ordeal that didn't need to exist happening hours before RE1 instead of being about the rise of umbrella.
now I'm sorry that I can't view this in your super filmmaker "get behind the character" sort of way, but I'm sure you can at least see where I'm coming from here.

It's not a bad game despite whatever Jew and I are debating. I say you'll like it.

Agreed. Capcom sucks at their retcons, but I thought they did a decent job faking their way by.

Indeed. That prequel was entirely unnecessary and raised more questions than answers. But I can only guess that was the only way to make Rebecca a lead character, since apparently she retires after Resident Evil 1 (although I'm still in the dark on that one).

Indeed I do. I'm still not really sure how this all escalated, cause we both liked the game. We're just nitpicky.

it's probably because we're both nerds. I could only imagine how this would have gone on if someone mentioned the Wesker Report.
at least rebecca got a more important role in the S.D. Perry books, amirite?

... Ugh... Wesker Report... All that proved is Capcom really doesn't know what they're doing with the RE mythos.

it legitimately made no sense.
I have to catch up on my S.D. Perry books. I think the last one I read was the novelization of RE3. S.D Perry also did some alien and predator books with her dad.
